Stapenhill struggle to break down league leaders

LUKE Thorogood bagged the winner for league leaders Ashby Ivanhoe in a hard-fought encounter at Edge Hill.

Once again Stapenhill had their moments but found visiting keeper Chris Hodge in defiant mood.

With local pride at stake this was no place for the faint-hearted and the scene was set as early as he third minute when Harry Austin scythed down Ivanhoe's Scott Cordy and was fortunate to escape a booking.

The Swans got going with Danny Chatfield surging past Ali Allibahi down the left, only to over-hit his final cross.

Alex Britton then hit Tom Ellerton, the latter forcing a fine save from Hodge, who tipped the ball over.

From the resultant corner, swung in by Tom Liversage, the visitors partially cleared the danger but the ball fell to Tom Nolan who sent a screamer just over.

Ashby settled down and forced three corners in quick succession, all taken by set piece specialist Chris Waldrum.

From the last one, whipped into the six-yard box, the Swans failed to deal with it and Thorogood reacted first to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

Just before the break, Cordy and Austin clashed again and this time it was Austin who came off worst in the tackle, unable to continue after damaging his ankle.

Cordy picked up a yellow card for his part in the incident.

On the restart, Ashby had the first chance when a low driven cross by Kerr Horn just eluded Cordy as he closed in at the far post.

At the other end, a superb cross whipped in by Nathan Rolph was met by Brent Upton who saw his goal-bound header acrobatically tipped over by Hodge.

Then midfielder Liversage surged forward from a central area to the edge of the box, but again his fierce low shot was tipped round the post by Hodge.

His counterpart Harry Bullock then did well to deny Cordy with a smart save.

The Swans threw men forward in a desperate search for the equaliser and forced a couple of corners, both caught under pressure by the impressive Hodge.

Ashby also went close to doubling their advantage with Thorogood releasing Waldrum but the winger dragged his shot wide.

Well into injury time, Phil Wheildon chased down a long clearance and got his shot away but it was blocked by a resolute Ashby rearguard, who then ran down the clock to take all three points.
