Swans downed by another late strike

A TERRIFIC shot from substitute Andy Fell gave Ayleston Park the win late on at a windswept Saffron Lane.

Rich Lewis opened the scoring for the hosts from the spot, before Tom Liversage levelled for Stapenhill.

With a gale force wind blowing, both teams struggled to put a string of passes together, but Swans' defender Harry Austin did test keeper Sam Taylor with a long dipping free kick which the back-pedalling keeper caught under his crossbar.

Then Alex Rowland hit Liversage who went one-on-one with Taylor but the keeper, who had initially delayed leaving his line, made up ground quickly to claim the ball from the striker.

This was a decent opening spell for the Swans and when a close range shot from Liversage was blocked, Matt Weightman pounced on the rebound but blazed over.

Next, Matt Oliver and Weightman combined to release Liversage – but the striker's low driven cross was booted clear.

The Swans again went close to breaking the deadlock in the 26th minute. Rowland and Liversage combined to give Callum McBride a real chance and the midfielder saw his goalbound cross-shot superbly tipped over by Taylor.

On the half-hour, an Alex Johnson free kick held up in the swirling wind and created a dangerous situation for the visitors, with the ball finally dropping to Jouel Potter at the near post – but the striker put it just wide.

At the other end, a through ball from McBride sent Liversage clear. The striker lobbed the advancing Taylor but saw the ball drift agonisingly past the far post.

After a couple of well taken free kicks by Park's Johnson had caused real problems for the Swans – who had eventually got the ball away – the hosts opened the scoring in first half injury time.

Left winger Nuno Gomes twisted and turned in the box before tempting McBride into a rash challenge, which saw Gomes hit the deck.

Referee Simon Fradley had no doubt it was a penalty and pointed to the spot. Rich Lewis buried the spot kick.

On the restart, the Swans pressed for the equaliser with a wicked free kick by Austin creating havoc in the box, and Kieran Neat, in a desperate attempt to clear the danger, sliced his clearance against his own post.

Ellerton then exchanged passes with McBride but his final cross was cleared.

Park were always dangerous on the break with Lewis, sliding in at the far post, just unable to reach an inviting low cross.

And two minutes later the Swans levelled with a well-worked goal.

Austin found Lewis Campbell down the left and the winger whipped in a fine cross to Liversage who set himself before hooking in a sweet volley past a helpless Taylor.

The Swans were good value for a draw at this stage, but once again they were unable to hold on for what would have been a hard-earned point.

Park pushed on and had three chances in the last seven minutes. Substitute Fell glanced a close range header just wide from inside the six-yard box.

Then a surging run and cross from Donaghy found Lewis unmarked and unchallenged at the far post, but the striker put it wide when it looked easier to score.

But the pressure told, and three minutes from time Park got the winner.

A routine ball fired into the box was only partially cleared and eventually reached Fell, who promptly smashed an unstoppable volley into the top corner to seal all three points for the hosts.
