Another top player pledges his time, dedication and skills to St Austell Rugby Club! Our senior squad is shaping up into an exciting prospect for both league and cup success and pre-training is testimony to the enthusiasm of them as regularly 40+ are turning up and putting the effort in on a weekly basis despite us now being firmly in the holiday season. Nelly joining what is already a strong home-grown squad just raises the bar for players, coaches, staff and volunteers around the club to be ready to welcome you all over the threshold for the exciting pre-season fixtures we have lined up (Saints fixtures are HERE) and our Western Counties West league games for the 19/20 season.
Nelly’s past clubs include Barnstaple, Cheltenham North, Old Patesians, Launceston, Redruth and Cornwall and we are so lucky to have him.
Here is what people are saying about Nelly joining us:
Joel Double (Club Chairman) - We are delighted to welcome Nelly to St Austell. Rugby is a family and we are pleased to be able to give him a place to continue playing this fantastic game. We look forward to seeing him pull on a St Austell RFC shirt and provide exciting rugby for our supporters.
Kyle Marriott (Saints Head Coach/Player) - It is a great honour for St Austell to have someone of Nelly’s pedigree joining the club. He is a talented acquisition and we are grateful he has chosen to postpone his retirement from rugby and join us. I have known Nelly for a number of years, he is a skill-full and physical centre and a great personality who will no doubt be an excellent mentor to younger members of the back line.
Miles Davey (Club Captain) - It’s awesome that the club is attracting the likes of Nelly. Not only for his on-field experience but also because he’s a great clubmen. On a personal note really looking forward to working with Big Nell again, been far too long since our Uni days.
Paul Hayes (Co-Saints Team Manager) - Nelly is an exciting signing who will bring some added guile, power and pace to the Saints' backline. Alongside his undoubted talent, Nelly will bring a wealth of national League experience from his days at Redruth, Launceston and Barnstaple as well as some special performances in the Black and Gold of Cornwall. Nelly will no doubt set high standards which will hopefully challenge and inspire a young squad to improve and achieve success in 2019-20.
Dave Clark (Director of Rugby) - We are of course highly delighted that when Nelly Webber decided to return to rugby following a period of injury he chose us at St Austell RFC. I believe the reason is that we are a club that warmly welcomes players of all capabilities, but more than that, we are a club that does what it says through our #Saintsfamily approach to rugby.
I once saw parenting described as preparing young people for their journey through life so when they reach adulthood they can engage and succeed at the highest possible level. That in fact mirrors exactly our approach to developing our rugby players, from youth to adult. We have a great youth player base which operates very successfully thanks to all the volunteers who give their precious time to work with our young players. As they progress through the age groups, our youth are picked up by our Colts Academy structure, through which they learn club structures and patterns, enabling them to progress into the senior squads and play for our 1sts, The Saints, or 2nds, The Sinners. Our Girls and Ladies are also developing along similar lines, at a slightly slower pace.
For these reasons, not only do players like Nelly and Sam Parsons seek us out, but we also get players who, for whatever reason, moved away from the club, returning. This season alone we have seen 5 quality players coming back in, plus another 3 or 4 returning from injury. Welcome Nelly and we can’t wait to see you shine in a St Austell RFC shirt!
We still need some volunteers for the coming season. Have a look HERE to see if you can get involved.
