February, another month with only one home fixture in it and that’s been and gone already! Now we have Wellington away off the back of a draw and a narrow defeat. What’s in store up the M5?
Wellington (the R&B’s) took their A-game to Sidmouth last week and could well have taken all the spoils but it finished in an 11-all draw. The R&B’s dominated territorially for much of the first half whilst playing down the slope. They had two tries disallowed for being held up/ref unsighted so it could have been an entirely different story. The theme of the game seems to have been them camped on the Sidmouth line and Sidmouth repelling all boarders. This has got to have boosted their confidence before the Saints travel so we need to be sharp from the kick-off to pull off the season double.
The R&B’s have posted some big scores this season, many in the 50’s and one in the 60’s and this is evidenced by their 11 try scoring bonus points from 17 games, so they know where the try-line is. They sit 4th in the league and have 2 games in hand on the Saints and have lost one less game.
Saints have now played 19 games, 4 of which they have lost and 1 drawn. Last Saturday they were narrowly defeated by a resurgent Wadebridge (who incidentally where the last to beat Welly). Despite Saints dominating the early scrum and playing some flowing rugby across the width of the park the Camels dug in and ground out a win. This Saturday potentially offers a tougher challenge so let’s see what Kyle Marriott, Saints Head Coach has to say:
“After a couple of tough Cornish derby games a trip to high flying Wellington is just the ticket. No motivation is needed this week and Wellington have shown recently what a talented side they are. Once again, the Saints side are busy preparing and continually looking to improve and build on previous weeks. We aim to pull it all together this weekend and put a performance in worthy of the result. A coach trip with travelling support is sure to add some extra motivation. COYS!!”
It’s also a break from the 6 Nations this week so as I type this there is the Sinners playing Saltash at home with a 2.30pm KO. Please come and cheer them on if not travelling to Wellington!
For this that want to travel to Wellington on the players’ coach there are a number of spare seats and the cost is £10. Please contact Al Cummins on 07902 216417 to book a seat.
