Grit, Determination and Team Spirit on Show!

Against the odds and recent weather we managed to get another game away to Truro! The plucky U-11’s arrived at TRFC and squelched down to the ‘Lower Field’ where the game was being played on which does actually resemble a farmers field!

That said a game is a game! Running out for the Saints this week, Ty (C), Maximillian, Thomas, William, Riley, Rhys, Jago, Alfie and Jonny. Lillian had to pull out late due to injury, so Ty stepped up to the mark as scrum half.

Conditions dictated that it was not going to be a running game. In Horse Racing speak the going was soft... very soft!

With the slope against us Jonny kicked off and considering the weather it was a brilliant kick. There was then, I would say, a passage of play that would make the international scene look poor. The ball did not go dead for around 5 mins non-stop, both sides tackling like demons. Truro scored a couple but with the advantage of the slope this was inevitable, the field cutting up to a point that there was no grass to be seen.

However, the Saints never gave up and tackled and played hard with Maximillian, William and Riley gaining hard yards up the slope, Jago providing excellent support and getting the ball as he found his voice letting every know where he was. Thomas was trying to use his speed on the wings but the going really didn’t suit his normal way of playing.

Half time came and Jago, Alfie and Rhys had a scrum training session from Coach Paul and that made a difference. As we set off again Truro started losing the ball from the set platform, meaning they were on the back foot most of the second half. Maximillian had a try disallowed due to an earlier knock on, Riley and William came close twice. Finally with a concerted effort, William was driven over the whitewash! During this he received an elbow to the head. After a quick Assessment and a breather he was back on into the fray. Truro continued to kick out of their 22, but all were caught with ease and ran back into the danger area. The team demonstrated some real spirit, playing and tackling for each other and sharing the burden all over the field.

Coach Ian pointed this out and it was confirmed by the spectators, regardless of the result and certainly not helped by the conditions, the team played the best rugby of the current season and showed some real St Austell rugby spirit.

Man of the Match: Jago for stepping up to the mark when it was needed.
