The Sinners fall just short

On Saturday the Sinners visited Helston one of the friendliest rugby clubs in Cornwall
In beautiful weather the game started with Helston on the front foot and after about five minutes, they were awarded the first of many penalties given away by an over exuberant St Austell side. The kicker took the easy three points and before we knew it they were rushing over to score the first try of the game which is then converted so it was 10 -0 before we knew it,
Giving away penalties at the breakdown is becoming a recurring theme and discipline something we need to work really hard on in training.
Sam Kendall then scored the Sinners first try unfortunately the extras are missed so it was now 10 -5. The game was a bit more even now although St Austell still kept giving away penalties. Helston got the next score a try which was converted so we went into half time at 17 -5.
The second half started with the Sinners much more on the front foot and soon James inch powered over to score our second try which George Brooks converted to take us to 17-12. St Austell now had a period of real dominance but failed to turn the pressure into points.
With time running out Helston manage to break off the back of a scrum and run nearly half the length of the pitch to score. The conversion was missed so now it was 20 to 12. The Sinners dug in really deep and there is still time for one more score with Bill Jones touching down which George converted take the final score to 22-19.Our thanks to Will Guilder who went down to play but offered to stand in and ref the game when no official referee could be appointed.
This Sinners side is really progressing if we can sort out our discipline around the breakdown we should have a excellent season.
Many thanks to Helston as always fantastic hosts .It was a hugely committed game with both sides giving they're all in the true spirit of rugby.
Man of the match this week goes to our captain Darren Thompson. He led from the front for the whole game ,never taking a backward step . His commitment and passion will help lead this young group of players forward into our league campaign.
