Too strong for Saltash!

Duchy Cup

10/2/2018

St Austell Sinners 32 – Saltash 2'nds 3

This was the third time these 2 sides have met this year and what a game it was to be. St Austell started playing up the slope and took the kick-off, which was immediately run straight back at them and play was inside the St Austell half within seconds. Great attacking by Saltash kept St Austell pinned in their own half, defending superbly, until a penalty was awarded to the left of the posts which Saltash converted. They were 3 – 0 up!

The Sinners came back strongly and were up against some quality defending from Saltash, making it hard to penetrate and cross the line. However, Sinners never gave up and it was Man of the Match Treve Murley who opened the scoring with a great dive over the line to put Sinners ahead with an unconverted try, 5 – 2.

That is how the score stood at half time – Sinners and Saltash standing toe to toe, slugging it out as two well matched sides.

Some tactical substitutions at half time turned the game into one of two halves – two distinctly different halves as it turned out. From the start, Sinners had their tails up and it was not long before Jeffsey was awarded a try following a great effort by the pack who pushed over in the far corner. 10 – 3, the gap was widening. Or was it?

Saltash came back strongly and much of the play was centered around the middle of the pitch until Sinner’s backs broke free and Jake Carr, fresh off the bench at half time, scored one of his fantastic trademark run-in tries under the posts. Great conversion from Billy Jones.

Bouyed up by the score a new energy rippled through the side and as a result Harry Bardsley, lightened by the removal of the wheels at the end of his moustache, showed what he can do on the other wing and streaked over to claim 5 points for Sinners.

The end of the game belonged to Jake Carr, who scored a further two tries to secure his hat trick. The first was a heart stopper. It came from a run by Darren Thompson who must have covered 80 meters only to be caught just inches from the line by an olympic sprinter and brought down, before delivering a magnificent pop pass to Jake Carr running on his shoulder, and a try was scored. Finally, Jake had his eye on a trio because in the last minutes of the game, following great work by the team, the ball was delivered to Jake and he completed his hat trick.

The final whistle went following an unsuccessful conversion attempt.

Sinners put out 20 players, all of whom made a great contribution to this result. Well done Sinners. It is reportedly the final next. Watch this space.
