Bennies ground out a win away to Millom

On a sunny but windy afternoon, Bennies travelled to Millom for their second fixture in Cumbria 1.

Bennies kicked off, and from the kick off gained possession after a great catch from winger Fergus Baird. Bennies went through several phases but knocked on 10m out. Bennies quickly regained possession and attacked through both backs and forwards but after several drives from the forwards seen second row James Finnegin power his way over for the first try of the game. The conversion was missed to make it 5-0 to Bennies.
Bennies regained possession from the kick off and quickly found themselves in Milloms half. A penalty conceded by Millom was kicked into Milloms 22m area. Bennies got great ball from the lineout and after a strong carry into midfield seen the ball flashed back and Hooker Mark Routledge put Gary Gibbons away in space where he outpaced the covering defence to score a well worked team try. conversion missed 10-0 to Bennies.

The next 20 mins seen both team handing over possession regularly with handling errors or Falling foul of the referees whistle. on 38 minutes, Millom were caught offside and with the half drawing to a close, Connor Holliday kick the penalty to make it 13-0 at half time.

Bennies secured the kick off after half time and soon found themselves in Millom territory after great work from the forwards. After Full Back Karl Drake was tackled 20m out from the Millom line, again, Mark Routledge drew his man and put impressive flanker Ryan Fisher into a hole to see his crash over from 20m out. Conversion was good to see Bennies lead 20-0.

Bennies were then the team to be made to defend when Millom used there forwards to make inroads into the Bennies defence only for a handling error to bring a halt to their attack. Bennies took advantage with Centre Reece Lancaster and then prop James Taylor making greats yards into the Millom 20m. The ball was spread along the long and found Reece Lancaster who dummied his man and powered over the line. The conversion was good again from Connor Holliday to make it 27-0 with 20mins to go.

Some teams at this stage would give up but Millom started to come into the game and were spreading the ball wide. This proved successful numerous time with them making great yards into Bennies territory and one time would have been a try if not for the play being called back for a forward pass. Millom finally got a deserved try on the scoreboard when they went over in the corner but the conversion was missed to make it 27-5. The last 10mins were played mainly in the middle of the park with both team defence not allowing eachother to gain any advantage with the game finishing 27-5 to Bennies.

This was a real test against a good Millom side. Man of the match went to James Finnegin who scored his first try for the club and is improving each week with great work in both attack and defence. He was followed closely by Centre Reece Lancaster who was a handful all day for Milloms defence and Flanker Ryan Fisher who worked tirelessly all day.

Next week we play Creighton in our first home game at Newlands Ave For 16 month. So let's get down and support the lads.
