Once again we struggled to put out a full team, which seems to be the story of this season. Today we started without Lucas, Idris and Woody and it was only thanks to a late call up for Mylan that we even had a sub. So we started with five U10's again today, and I have to say that I thought we battled really hard and were a match for a strong Merton side containing some Cat 1 academy players in the opening half. We were creating some good chances too, and I know that one morning it is all going to click for Charlie up top and that will be the catalyst for him to go on and score even more.
But his chances weren't sitters, he worked hard to find the spaces and they were half chances at best. The team were battling hard all over the pitch and it was a very even game of football. Sadly, as is the case for every game at every level, silly mistakes led to us conceding goals and today was no different.
The visitors took the lead in the first half but Tommy kept us in the game with some fine goalkeeping. We were quite limited with what we could change with our lack of substitutes, but at the break we knew that we were still in the game. I think that the visitors' quality showed in the second half and they had more and more possession and looked dangerous on the break, but the goals that we gifted them could have been avoided.
Two players were unmarked at the back post for one goal, Tommy made a super save and nobody contested the second ball to allow another, and then we conceded a needless throw which led to a break for the fourth. These are little things, but they are hurting us after we have battled so hard to stay in a tight game against a good side. I have no doubt that our first win is not far away, if we can keep working hard and trying to do the right things, it will come.
Everyone worked hard this morning, but some standout performances from Joey parker and Theo Kundrik today. Charlie and Vinny also worked hard up front where it can so tough against good defenders, and Jomi covered every blade of grass today. Tommy also kept the score line respectable with some safe hands. And I think that was the best games we've seen from Jack Cunnane and Mylan.
We go again!
