Charlie Dyer inspires St Helens Town to win at Poynton FC

Saints win on the road

St Helens Town picked up an important away win beating Poynton FC 3-1 in the sunshine as the Cheshire league campaign starts to take shape.

It would not be plain sailing though and Poynton who have won multiple Premier division league titles in recent years had the better first half chances but Town's Lewis Jenkinson would deny them several times before Ryan Cook won a Town penalty.

Up stepped Dek Hill and the number ten dispatched it to put Town one up at half time with most onlookers agreeing that Town were fortunate to be ahead.

With the second half barely minutes old, Ryan Cook took an opportunistic left foot finish for Town to double the lead much to the delight of the travelling away fans.

However, Poynton hit back within minutes when Keenan Edwards strike from the edge of the box beat Jenkinson to make it 1-2.

Edwards was a thorn in Town's side all game and Town would need to be alert to his impact on the game as Poynton threatened to equalise but the second half centre back pairing of Oliver Filson and Jack Critchlow did a sterling job for Town.

Charlie Dyer's introduction by Manager Paul Piert early in the second half would also have a major impact on the fixture.

His cross was headed home by Cook to get the striker his brace and put Town 1-3 up to take all three points.

Dyer's performance in midfield with his smart play in tight spaces and seemingly uncanny ability to draw a free kick from opposition defenders earned him the St Helens Borough Food Pantry player of the match award.

Town next play league leaders Skelmersdale Town at home next Saturday (26 September) in a 3pm kick off at the CBS Stadium, Ruskin with a big crowd expected.
