A pleasant late summers afternoon and a well kept grass pitch made for the perfect setting for a game of non league football. Whilst the distraction of the Merseyside derby was happening a few miles away as well as a 3pm ko for Saints, a dozen or so hardcore Town faithful still ventured to Alder Road for the Liverpool County Premiere game against Liverpool Nalgo. With the locals still gathered around the tv in the clubhouse watching the Merseyside giants slog it out, the early kick off time of 2pm meant most of Nalgo’s supporters would only join proceedings later in the first half.
Town struck first with a goal from the talented Okeregha Oghenetega, who’s pace and skill gave the home side no rest. A penalty on the 32 minute gave Nalgo the equaliser but within 5 minutes Town went back in front thanks to a goal from Michael Rowlinson.
After the break Town started the better of the two sides. That was until 10 minutes into the half disaster struck when the Town keeper Will Burrows was judged to have handled the ball outside of his area, a straight red saw Town reduced to 10 and with no recognised keeper on the bench due to illness it would be veteran Danny Hughes stepping up to goal duties. Ten men Town went 3-1 up thanks to an excellent goal from Michael Lacey. However despite Danny Hughes heroics and another penalty to Nalgo, Town couldn’t hang on and lost the game 5-3. It was a harsh result for the Blues but the side are improving with every game and the wins will surely come.
