An inspired show of rugby from St Ives brought about a 3 try tally, bolstered by a trio of converted penalties.

Sizing up the opposing sides before the game you could be forgiven for thinking this was a proverbial schoolboys vs the masters game. The Wellingborough pack was showing significantly more weight, and potentially more power, against a distinctively youthful St Ives pack.

No sooner had the starting whistle fallen from the refs lips and a rabid St Ives were all over Wellingborough. The travelling terriers Adam Scott and Josh 'Brakelight' Meadows were up and in the face of any poor Wellingborough soul unfortunate enough to find themselves in possession of the ball. St Ives' ability to scuttle Wellingboroughs best asset of weight and size well before it could be turned against them was inspirational and was to last the full game.

After 5 minutes St Ives had assaulted the Wellingborough try line three times without reward, but the writing was on the wall. St Ives held their own scrum after scrum, despite the weight issue, also winning clean lineout ball with the team salmons, Ross Thompson and Andy Grieve, plucking ball after ball for a sharp Jerome Walter to tidily deliver to the St Ives backs. The pressure did draw penalties for St Ives, within kicking range for the pixie look alike Jack Blockley to strive to convert. On his third attempt Jack found the measure of his pink boots and added three points to the scoreboard.

After 15 minutes of game play one of the many slick backs moves between Chicken Wing, John Le-Pop set the elder Jim Robinson up for his try of the day. This try went unconverted and the scoreboard now showed St Ives leading 8-0.

The welly was now on the other foot as, for the rest of the first half, St Ives found themselves under attack and handing out penalties a plenty as the Welly boys endeavoured to turn any situation into a concerted attack. One such penalty was kicked by the home prop to conclude the first half at 8-3 to St Ives.

As the 2nd half opened St Ives added to the penalty count and were duly punished by the Wellingborough team who added another three points to their scoreboard. From here on the game slowly swung in favour to St Ives who found form and enthusiasm for the task in hand. Every player on the team brought all to bear and the pressure was starting to overwhelm the Wellingborough boys. Jack adjusted the crosshairs on his pink boots and two penalties found the mark whilst two against St Ives slipped wide of the posts and scoreboard.
More silky smooth passing through the backs delivered a confused Emanuel to the 5 yard line and then in turn the try line for his try of the day. This was duly converted. Now St Ives were cock sure and prowling for more as they sniped for their final try with another superb backs move finished by the Hermes of the team Tom Wakerley... who duly scored with his backside. Jack converted this final try to end the game 28-6 to St Ives.

The game was fast, physical and was always going to go St Ives' way with the attitude and belligerency of the St Ives team. The 1st XV captain was delighted and said of the game ' Och I love haggis'.
