Hosts show the way in attack and defence

The game started with a couple of thumping tackles in midfield by Duncan Williams to lift the travelling Bulls’ spirits.
Things turned sour, however, when two penalty concessions in quick succession gave the hosts a 5-metre lineout. A well-set rolling maul resulted in a try.
From the kick-off, it was clearly not going to be St. Ives’ day. The home 10 was put under pressure and lofted a kick wide to his winger who was clearly receiving in an offside position. Unnoticed by the arbiter, the winger scampered upfield drew the last defender and put his colleague in to score.
Ives defence began to get off the line more quickly putting the hosts under pressure, but a knock on from an attempted interception was deemed to be deliberate and Old Scouts kicked the penalty.
There followed a 15-minute passage where Ives showed their mettle. The scrum was performing well and producing decent ball. When Ives remained patient and looked after that ball, they looked dangerous, but the home defence was resilient.
Regaining possession, Old Scouts attacked again. The rush defence nearly gifted Ives an interception. Once again, the knock on was deemed deliberate, this time the offender being sent to the bin.
During the period of an extra man, Old Scouts were able to make it count with two further tries.
Half time 27-0
Old Scouts scored almost from the restart when a fumble by Ives granted them possession.
Again, Ives girded their loins for a greater effort and played with greater intensity for twenty minutes. They will reflect that there were good passages of continuity, but they were unable to gain any reward for their efforts.
Defensively, Ben Fleming put in a great shift as the last line, with Warwick Brittany and skipper Ollie Bartlett scrambling well.
Relieving the pressure in their own half, Old Scouts were happy to kick long to touch. Unfortunately for the Bulls, their lineout was insecure this time, Old Scouts gathered the ball and a speedy transition saw them score.
With scores on the day apparently coming in pairs, a smart cross kick ahead from the Old Scouts winger saw his wing partner win the foot race for a try.
Ives attempts to get a consolation score were dashed when they coughed up possession, their hosts taking a direct route to rub salt into the Bulls’ wounds.
Following the match, coach Max Dominy commented, “Whilst obviously disappointing, we must realise that we are trying new things and the progression is visible. Unfortunately, when we let our standards slip, they took full advantage.”
