Bulls grab try bonus point at the death

The final league match of the campaign proved to be a microcosm of the Bulls’ season as they slipped to defeat against 4th placed Market Bosworth.
Playing against the wind, Ives started well and maintained possession for long periods. The deadlock was broken when Duncan Williams, playing in his retirement match, crashed over for the opening try.
Soon after, a turnover in midfield saw Ives break. Swift hands across the line released Mike Brennan, also playing his last game following his move away from the area. He slipped the ball inside to the supporting Williams who on being held just short of the line offloaded to Joe Cox to score.
Bosworth were stung into action and Ives found themselves on the wrong end of the penalty count when their blitz defence was sprung a tad early. The visitors made good use of the territory and finally crashed over for a converted try.
The Bulls were unable to convert more of their own possession into points and the game was finely poised.
However, 15 minutes either side of half time saw the game swing decisively in Bosworth’s favour.
More penalty concessions gave them the opportunity to hammer the Ives line, resulting in another converted score.
Salt was rubbed into the opening wound when a comedy of errors behind the dominant Ives scrum saw the ball head towards the hosts’ try line. Bosworth whipped the ball wide after a series of drives for the final score of the half. 10-19.
Immediately after the restart, Bosworth tapped quickly from a penalty in front and scored under the posts for their try bonus point.
Despite being three scores behind, Ives did have opportunities. From one such attack, the ball was lost in contact and Bosworth needed no second invitation to sweep downfield and score their fifth try.
Ives were determined to get something from the game and the next twenty minutes saw them with frequent opportunities to make ground, only for errors to halt their progress.
They finally came good when a quickly taken penalty saw the ball reach the returning Mickey Drake. He jinked his way past a couple of defenders to score.
Bosworth snuffed out Ives’ hopes of victory when, despite their scrum going into reverse, they kept possession and recycled well to make their way downfield. A tiny gap was taken by the visiting fullback who scored out wide.
With time running out, Ives made a big effort from a lineout and mauled their opposition fully 15 metres before Williams dropped down to score his second and the team’s try bonus point score.
With Head Coach Max Dominy also ending his spell in charge, it was not the manner in which the team had hoped to sign off a difficult season. As in many games over the past 8 months, Ives had demonstrated potential, but been unable to convert opportunities into points.
The group will take the summer to rest up and attack next season with renewed vigour.
