Promising signs after first quarter somnambulance

St. Ives made the long trek to Market Bosworth for their eagerly awaited first league match for 18 months. From the kick off Ives started well, but their opening efforts brought no reward.
Bosworth gained possession and slick handling saw them round Ives’ defence to score a converted try.
There followed two quick scores which were aided by Ives waiting for whistles that never came. The first saw 29 players stop expecting an infringement to be penalised. The 30th player pocketed the ball and walked backwards over the line, watching for the arbiter’s reaction – which was to award the try.
The next saw a deep kick by the Bosworth full back chased by the home winger who was riding his luck having taken a ten-metre head start on the kick. Again, Ives were caught napping as he gathered and scored.
Shaken out of their reverie, Ives began to play with much purpose and pressured the home defence. Finally stretching the ball wide ended with Jack Blackley walking into the corner.
A dash by the home stand off saw him over the line, but he dropped the ball. The relief was short lived as from the goal line drop out Bosworth found a gap to score as the half closed.
Half time 24-5.
The Bulls started the second half in much better shape. After a series of punishing drives by the forwards, Shaun Mundy was on hand to crash over the line.
Shortly after, a lineout was well won by Ollie Bartlett. Bosworth stood off hoping to gain an obstruction decision, but Ives were switched on with Bartlett simply turning and forcing his way over.
A fine conversion by Alex Henly brought Ives within 5 points after a great turn around. With disruptions to the back line after a couple of knocks, Ives unfortunately spilled the in the midst of a promising attack. The grateful Bosworth centre dribbled the ball through and flopped over the line.
With Ives trying their utmost to secure at least a try scoring bonus point, their hands let them down at the last moment. Another kick through and chase down the left saw Bosworth add a gloss to their victory with another try.
Ives will brush themselves down and practise hard for the fixture versus Northampton Casuals on 2nd October.
Final score 38-19.
