Visitors make the most of much possession

The Bulls started the encounter well when a clearance kick from the Renegades 22 to half way , Shire got a hand to the ball and picked up the scraps then went on a weaving run to then a chip kick, fly hack through to only run out of pitch and the ball to go dead.
From then on Renegades worked their way up the pitch to put an early hold on to the St. Ives 22m line. St Ives chose to run out from their own 22, only to lose possession from a scrum. From the break Renegades scored at the foot of the post. Try converted. Score 0 to 7.
Only 5 minutes later St. Ives found themselves camped in their own 22. After being awarded a scrum the backline again tried to run out of defence only to give away a penalty. A quick tap from Renegades saw a few phases before scoring on the blind side in the corner. Try unconverted. Score 0 to 12.
Half way point of the 1st half, saw some great perseverance from the St. Ives attack after a series of two penalties , St. Ives pressed the Renegades try line. Brave line breaks by Woodrow, then Riches under the posts saw desperate tackling by Renegades. Some good phases of play left of the posts saw Peach eventually cross the line. Try unconverted score 5 to 12.
With things looking evenly matched an excellent line break from Boyle debuting at scrum half , gained st. Ives an extra 10m from defence although he then suffered an injury from the resulting ruck. Changes to key positions pushed Scott to no.9 and Cherrington off the bench to back row.
More sustained pressure from Renegades left St Ives camped in their own half, which saw some spirited defence by the Bulls. With a Renegades attack halted 15m out , a tackle was deemed high, which saw Sykes seeing a yellow card.
From the resulting penalty which Renegades chose to scrum, another conceded penalty saw Renegades take a quick tap and score in the corner. Try unconverted half time 5 to 17.
The 2nd half once again saw St Ives back in their own half. From an attack down the touchline by Renegades they eventually scored under the posts. Try converted 5 to 24.
Once again St Ives found themselves deep in their 22, a line out not quite going to hand saw a tremendous break by Cherrington who ran from his own try line to be tackled on the 22 to launch a pass wide to Dexter to get the home team up to the half way line.
A penalty award on the half way saw Fahey kick for the corner. From the resulting lineout a sharp backs move and a sidestep saw Fahey make the line break to score from 25m. Converted try by Fahey score 12 to 24.
Renegades again applied pressure and showed dominance in the scrum to gain a series of line breaks. Some great tackling by the defence eventually gave way for Renegades to score under the posts. Try converted score 12 to 31.
The "never quit spirit" finally got the Bulls to keep possession from a scrum just on the Renegades 10m line. A pick and go by Thompson saw some great passing by the backs to be held up just 10m from the try line. A penalty gave the chance for Fahey to kick for the corner. The lineout was again knocked backwards only for Padderson to pick up 15m out, to dodge and weave his way to the line. Try unconverted score 17 to 31.
From the kick off a mix up with the catch saw Renegades pick up the loose ball to score. Try unconverted 17 to 36.
Another lineout from a kicked penalty late on saw Renegades catch set and drive a maul 10m, then to break down the left wing and score. Try converted by just brushing the crossbar and over.
Final score 17 to 43.
In summary a spirited performance from St. Ives against a higher ranked Renegades team, with some resolute defensive spells from the Bulls 2s in the game. Return fixture arranged for early January. Hopefully without the annoying drum!
