St Ives turn in a complete performance against a spirited Sawston side

This was St Ives 2nd XV's first league fixture of 2019 and the message before the game was to stick to the game plan that had been well rehearsed during the week. Winning the toss, Ives played up the slope in the first period and started well, testing Sawston’s defence with a variety of plays.
The pack provided a strong platform all day. The set piece was functioning and there were some strong carries from Messer’s Wright and Tate. Youngster Bradley Robinson was having an intriguing battle with the Sawston skipper in the front row and Ross was making yards off the base. The Legend that is Graham Moffitt backed up his statement on social media the evening before the game and along with assistance of Alex Fry, Bradley, Brandon McDonald and Kris Wright took four scrums against the head during the game.
The encouraging sign was the fact that the back three from St Ives scored all four tries in the first half. Once the pack had laid the platform, some delightful hands in the midfield allowed Jordan Edwards (2), Cullan Smy and Callum Long to apply the finishing touches to secure the bonus point before the break. 28-0
The half-time team talk was really just to build on the good stuff that had been produced in the first half and Ives flew out of the traps scoring a couple of really worked tries at the start of the second period. The speed at the breakdown was very impressive and Man Of The Match, Ben West distributed superbly to put Ives on the front foot.
Sawston to their credit kept fighting for the entire 80 minutes so Ives had to work hard for each try scored. Seven in total were recorded in the second half including a hat-trick for the impressive David Sykes, two from Sam Tuckwood and one each for Jim and Bradley Robinson.
Although there was some excellent play throughout, there are still a couple of things to work on as a couple of tries went begging and I have to mention Jordan Edwards for his slight error but he’s done his punishment by getting on a chair for the “DOTD” award and hopefully learned his lesson.
I’d like to finish by saying that the game played today is exactly was rugby is about. It was hard fought but in the right spirits and credit to Sawston for sticking at it. Interestingly in the bar after, I was chatting to their skipper and one of the things he said was we were well coached and had really good structure. This comes from practice so see you all on Tuesday……
