With recent announcements expected to lead to the suspension of community rugby for a month (at the time of writing the RFU is yet to confirm), St. Ives seniors converted their first and probably last November training session into a competitive intra-club tournament.
Five teams of adults battled it out marking the first competitive use of the new floodlights at Somersham Road. Using the RFU approved Ready4Rugby rules, the games were fast and sometimes furious as the enhanced touch rugby made for close and high scoring matches.
Coming out victorious on a cold autumn evening were Club Captain Josh Dear’s Dynamite, pipping Mickey Drake’s Destroyers after the latter could only manage a draw in their final match.
Naturally, the victory was toasted with a swig of a well-known Mexican lager.
Organiser and coach Max Dominy commented, “Whilst there are other important things going on around us, it was great to see the lads putting all their energies into the games. They practised what we have been training hard to achieve and played with smiles on their faces.”
DoR Phil Brown added, “With the announcement of no league fixtures for the season just made by the RFU, it is great to see 50 guys, including four new players on the night, still determined to enjoy themselves at the Club. We all look forward to continuing rugby in whatever form it takes as soon as it is safe to do so. New players aged from 6 to 60 are encouraged to keep an eye out for news of future activity and will be welcomed at the Chicken Shack.”
Individual award winners included:
Player of the tournament, Josh Dear
Rock star, Jamie Noble for his extraordinary toe-flick and dive to score
D***-of-the-day, Dave Sykes for his dive to score 10 metres short of the line
Energiser, Andrew Hutchinson for his positive encouragement throughout
Unsung hero, Jobey Wadd for his undying energy and support
