Match Report
Impavidus St Mary's Obrfc 2nds v Cleve 3rds
This was the first league game for the 2's and it had a group of players who had not played together before but had plenty of potential. Out two props Mike Goodfield and Oli Lathrope are only 17 and so we weren't able to have competitive scrums. This meant that the match was fast paced with the attacking team in control. We started well and in the forwards put them under pressure, resulting in the uncontested scrum being a great advantage and we scored 2 tries from this which were well worked. Our backs with the return of Reeder (Michael Reed) started in a jittery mood with passes not going to hand and no advantage being gained. Soon St Mary's were up 12 - 0 with Craig Capel slotting a great conversion. Cleve then countered as St Mary's relaxed and soon came back with 2 tries to make it 12 - 12 at 1/2 time. The 1/2 time team talk asked for a greater defensive output and to attack down their 10 channel. Immediately into the 2nd 1/2 these actions were followed and we scored 2 tries, our back line started to function excellently with good service from Micky Allen. Tom Allen moved to centre, our centre pairing worked really well as they attacked close to the fly half and tries followed. This enabled Craig Capel to control the game excellently with 2 dummies sold to the centres he was able to dance in underneath the posts for a fantastic try. Things were going so well we decided to run a ball from our own 22 with Liandras involved in the move several times. Sam Bonizzi scored a fantastic solo try which was down to all his own hard work. At the end of the match unfortunately the forwards took the ball on from a lineout and Gary Hesketh scored. We were able to put lots of pressure on them as our back row Sam Hesketh, Matt O'Keefe and Bernie McMullen applied lots of pressure to their 1/2 backs which often resulted in poor kicks and knock ons from them giving us a scrum. Oli Lathrope and Ethan Dyke played well with greater confidence than last season. James Boyland with his new trimmer figure got around the park better and made some good tackles. Callum Knapp and Nathan Bourton both played well but need more game time to prove themselves. Harrison Clutterbuck at full back looks an exciting prospect even tho he's only 17 and I'm sure it won't be long before he gains some 1st team experience. As always the side was ably led by Sean Rhodes who kept the team focused and once Craig Capel had finished sulking about not getting the captaincy he was able to lead the backs well. Final score 46 - 17 might look like it was easy but this was a well earn victory with a team that has great potential. We would like to see James Boyland, Micky Allen, Callum Knapp and Nathan Bourton a tuesdays training session - make the effort! Impavidus!!
