St Mary's finish the season in high spirits despite losing to Penryn

Sunday 29th April 2012
St Mary's Old Boy's Ladies 5-34 Penryn Ladies

After the terrible downfall over night on Saturday the pitches at St Mary's were all unplayable but Penryn really wanted to play and booked a coach to come all the way up from Cornwall. Thankfully Bristol Harlequins RFC were able to accomodate the game in the last match of the National Challenge South West A playoff league.

The kick-off was delayed due to bad traffic which meant the Mary's players were stood around getting very wet and cold and this showed in the first 20 minutes of the game when Penryn dominated and grabbed 2 tries for their efforts.

Unfortunately centre Esther Gasa Fonollosa got a hit to the ribs and struggled to breathe so emergency substitue Lisa McCormick came on to fly half pushing Laura Rugman out to centre where they both made impacts.

Mary's then began to get back into game with the forwards playing outstanding in the very muddy conditions and went into half time 14-0 down.

St Mary's came into their own in the 2nd half despite conceding an early try they were camped in the Penryn 22 for most of it but found it difficult to get through and score. Winger Lisa Larsen thought she had scored only to realise that she was over the 5 metre line and not the try line! However Mary's got the try they deserved when scrum half Lucy Bowering took a quick tap and go penalty from 10 metres and powered through to score. Laura Rugman was unlucky with the conversion attempt.

Mary's then unfortunately conceded 3 late tries after a combination of Penryn outnumbering Mary's and a few missed tackles to finish the game off to win 34-5.

Players of the match were awarded to forwards Kirsty Fido and Vicky Hayward but everyone on the pitch did themselves proud in their final game of the season.

St Mary's are looking to build on a good season this year with numerous players expected to return from long term injuries and pregnancy and hope to recruit new players to bolster their squad for next season. They have a good preseason planned which starts on Tuesday 19th June and are looking for new players of all abilites including complete beginners. Training will be on Tuesday's & Thursday's 6.45-8.30pm throughout next season at the club, Trench Lane, Winterbourne.
