A cracking 2nd half performance sees us come from behind to win emphatically on an emotional day at Trewint Lane.

On a day where Cornish football collectively said its goodbyes and paid its respect to the legend Trevor Mewton, who sadly passed away in the week. A fantastic minutes silence was observed before kick off versus a young Newquay side where Trevor had managed during his managerial career.

Locally it was our first game without our own legend Mark Menhinick, who due to work and other commitments has had to step down from his position as Assistant Manager. The work Mark has done for the team over the past 2 years has been amazing helping us to our record breaking treble last season. Some photos of appreciation can be seen in with today's match photos. We wish Mark all the very best and thank him from the bottom of our hearts for all he has brought to us over the last 2 years.

On to the football and what was the 1st leg of a festive treble of exciting fixtures as we faced a young Newquay side, then on Saturday we host Roche and on Boxing Day we travel to Wadebridge for a top of the table clash.

The team remained pretty much as it was in our last outing versus Callington 2 weeks before. The only change was young James McNary earning his deserved start at left back.

We started well and for the 1st 15 minutes dominated the game. Then against the run of play Newquay broke on us down their right and the ball was played in behind us. In his determination to get something on the ball, Ted Meagor unfortunately directed the ball in to his own net for 0-1.

We then struggled to string much flowing football together for a while, which gave our hosts more confidence. We sorted our game out and fashioned 4 very good chances but a mixture of great keeping and wayward finishing made it look like we were going in to the break 1-0 down. Then right on half time a great flick by Paul Menhinick found Ryan Pooley running in on goal and he finished cooly for the equaliser.

Half time: St Minver 1sts 1 - 1 Newquay Reserves

A good honest chat at half time and a tactical change and we came out a completely different proposition in the 2nd half.

Within 2 minutes of the restart a Ryan Pooley flick released Paul Menhinick and he dropped his shoulder and finished very well off the post. If strikers did art programmes...!

5 minutes later we were awarded a free kick which Ben Beesley swung in to the box on a six pence for Paul Menhinick to bag his 2nd in as many minutes with a well directed header putting us 3-1 up.

Just when we thought we had a comfortable lead, Newquay made it 3-2 against the run of play with a great strike after a direct run down their left flank and firing in a shot beating Ryan Holland at his near post at an acute and unstoppable angle.

On 62 minutes Ryan Pooley finished off a Steve Wootton cross for 4-2 before straight from kick off Paul Menhinick completed his hat-trick for 5-2 with a fantastic cross in from James McNary.

On 75 minutes Paul Menhinick made it 6-2 from a through ball for his forth of the afternoon with a man of the match performance.

Our final goal came from the spot after a wild tackle by a visiting defender was despatched with power by Ryan Pooley for his hat-trick and 7-2.

The last goal came Newquay's way right on the full time whistle when after a maisey run their midfielder eluded a number of tackles and fired home with a good strike from range and a final score of 7-3.

6 goals in the 2nd half was a massive improvement and we look to take that momentum in to the next 2 games, kicking off at home versus Roche this Saturday with a 14:30 kick off and then on Boxing Day we have an exciting away fixture against table toppers Wadebridge with a 12:00 kick off.

The Squad

Congratulations to this week's Sharps Brewery Man of the Match Paul Menhinick for his 4 goal haul.
