The league leaders were on top form and took an early lead with two good finishes in the first 15 minutes of the match. The first from a short corner finished smartly in the bottom corner of the goal and the second from some poor marking, left 3 Nomads plays free on the edge of the D, giving them a healthy 2-0 advantage. Then Saints seemed to react to this with an increased spell of possession and pressure, combining to eventually to break to goal drought from short corners, with Adam Maltby scoring with a well stuck shot from the top of the D, after being slipping the ball from the initial push out.
With the score line at 2-1 saints looked like they were chasing the league leaders and pushing for an deserved second goal. Nomads were equal to this though, and showed their attacking prowess with another goal shortly before the half time break, coming from a counter attack and slotted the ball under the oncoming Saint’s keeper Rob Morris.
The score line at half time was 3-1 and Saint Neots still felt that they had a chance if only they could be a bit more clinical in possession.
The second half was really a repeat of the first, Nomads making the most of their chances and Saint Neots chasing the game that was slipping away from them. Nomads were first to score after the restart, but saints were quick to counter and scored through a smartly driven shot from centre back Ant Holmes. Nomads saw the game out of reach of Saints by slotting another goal home 10minutes before time, making the final score 5-2 to the visitors and still league leaders Cambridge Nomads.
Saints had decent spells of the game, but really couldn’t contain their opposition, and those spell were few and far between. With errors all over the pitch Saints couldn’t help but wonder what the result would have been if they had played their best hockey for the full 70 minutes.
Man of the match awarded to Brett Nunn.
