24-7 Victory in Return Fixture against Colne

A great return fixture, and a credit to Colne for putting up a great fight and showing how much they’ve improved since we played them two months ago.

In the days leading up to our first away game of the season, we were feeling apprehensive about what we were to face in our first away game of the season - namely, the weather at the lofty altitudes of the Colne and Nelson pitch. As we made our way up the M66, it became clear that we had absolutely not packed enough skins/waterproofs/armbands.
Following a reshuffle of the team due to sickness and new players turning up, we started the match with 14 players against a squad of 19. Colne won the toss and chose to kick off, giving Vice Captain Helen her first touch of the ball and allowing her to take advantage of a gap on the wing and score within 30 seconds. This was swiftly converted by Captain Siân, taking the score to 7-0.
The restart saw Colne find their feet and put up some great defence. In the 8th phase, Emily cemented her Scarlets debut by driving through several members of the Colne defence and bringing the score to 12-0. Helen stepped up to the tee at this point, and a comfortable conversion took us to 14-0.
The next restart saw the Scarlets new back line set up start to come into it’s own; with all of the ladies making some great runs and gaining ground. Our next set of points came from Outside Centre Charlotte, who was on the receiving end of some great “hands down the line” - allowing her to take the ball through two defenders and score in the corner. Sians conversion from the side line fell two foot short, but the effort was rewarded by a round of applause from the Colne ladies.
Our last try was scored by our Captain Siân, and saw her pick the ball from the back of the scrum; run through four defenders and put the ball over the line. Conversion unfortunately missed, taking the score to 24-0.
The last few minutes of the game saw some more great runs, rucking and turnover balls by the Scarlets; and Colne scored their first try by taking advantage of a slow response to a turnover by the Scarlets defence. They converted and took the final score to 24-7.
A great return fixture, and a credit to Colne for putting up a great fight and showing how much they’ve improved since we played them two months ago.
Man of the Match went to Helen; forward of the match was Claire for some insane tackles and hooking; and back of the match to Lisa for some great runs, stepping into 9 last minute, and putting in some huge hits on the opposition. Props to Emily, Beth and Tegan for their Scarlets debuts; and a massive well done to every one of the Scarlets who played today!
