Injury hit Old Alleynians beat AFC Wulfrunians 1-0 in end of season battle

Midland Football League Premier Division
Saturday 20th April 2024

Stone Old Alleynians were playing this match back at their usual ground at Kings Park in their penultimate league match of the season. With neither team competing for promotion nor needing to stave off relegation, the game was a rather typical end of season affair, with both teams passing the ball around and occasionally threatening the opposition goal.

The first shot of the game came in the 6th minute, from the boot of Alleynians’ Jack Bowater whose shot from the edge of the penalty area was easily saved by visiting goalkeeper Joe Williams. The first real attack by Wulfrunians came in the 19th minute, when a dangerous move ended with home keeper George Hill having to react swiftly to a shot from inside the box. A minute later, Wulfrunians skilful No.11, Lee Chilton forced another save out of Hill with his shot from 15 yards.

In the 26th minute, player manager Luke Askey made a break into the Wulfs half before setting up Sam Bowater to shoot at goal. His effort was saved and went for a corner, but Alleynians could not take advantage. Six minutes later, it was Askey firing in a shot at the away goal after another corner but the ball was cleared.

Five minutes before half time, Wulfrunians mounted another attack on the home goal. This time it was their No.9, Ben Worthington, who managed to make room on the edge of the Alleynians goal area, before hitting his powerful shot towards the home goal, where Hill safely gathered the ball to keep the scores level at 0-0.

The early action of the second half saw both teams finding touch easily with their wayward passing. In the 53rd minute, Alleynians young midfielder, Charlie Batho, controlled the ball on the edge of the visitors’ penalty area. He stumbled over, but in his attempt to keep the possession, he managed to crawl a few yards with the ball stuck between his legs. Unfortunately, his teammates couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity and the ball was cleared.

In the 56th minute, Alleynians breathed a sigh of relief after a Wulfs player went down dramatically inside the home penalty area. Fortunately for the Old Boys, the referee was well placed to see the incident and he waved for play to continue. Six minutes later, Chilton, for Wulfrunians, made a superb run into the Alleynians box, having beaten a number of defenders on the way. He passed inside to Worthington but he made a complete hash of his effort at the home goal and the chance was gone.

In the 69th minute, Alleynians advanced up the pitch and the ball was passed into the visitors’ penalty area to the feet of Jack Bowater. His marker was a little too keen to get the ball and he succeeded only in knocking Bowater over, leaving the referee little option but to award a penalty. Up stepped the evergreen veteran, Dave Ablewhite, to take the penalty and he wasted no time in dispatching the ball into the opposite corner of the goal to where the Wulfs’ keeper Williams had dived, giving the Old Boys a 1-0 lead.

Alleynians replaced Sam Bowater with veteran striker Danny Heard for the last 10 minutes to help the team keep possession as they ran the clock down. Wulfrunians only threat during this time came from a corner but when the referee blew for a foul to the Stone team after an infringement, the hosts manged to hold on quite easily for a 1-0 victory and three points to consolidate their place in the Midland Football League Premier Division for another season.
