Stowmarket suffered their first home defeat at the hands of Ipswich. The sides had equal possession in the first half with Stowmarket edging the territorial advantage. However, the home side squandered a couple of chances and it was Ipswich who scored following their first concerted attack. An attacking scrum and a No8 break down the short side led to Ipswich scoring in the corner. Stowmarket’s response was swift as they drove a lineout maul from 10 metres out and skipper Jake Squirrell touched down for a try which was converted by Dan Garrard. Half time Stowmarket 7 Ipswich 5.
Stowmarket’s scrum had been dominant in the first half. However, that all changed after half time as twice the Stowmarket scrum were driven off the ball. The introduction of fresh legs into the Ipswich centre gave the away side more threat and it was no surprise when they scored after break through Stowmarket back line. The try was converted. Ipswich continued to dominate in most facets of play and kicked three penalties to keep the pressure on Stowmarket. They then scored the best try of the game. Following excellent running and handling they touched down for a try which was converted.
In the final ten minutes Stowmarket attacked hard looking for a consolatory bonus point. Half back Matt Boulton snipped over for a converted try but despite being camped on the Ipswich line that was their last score. Ipswich were deserved winners 25-14.
