A Job Well Done

Felixstowe 1st Team 0 Stowmarket 2nd Team 12
A lot can happen in a week and oh boy was this a different looking team from last week. As a result this team although far from perfect in execution, was most certainly was motivated by a single unifying purpose, namely to do everything to win this game.
Conditions were far from perfect although not as poor as when we arrived at Felixstowe Rugby Club. By kick off time the gale had subsided to nothing more than a strong wind with the occasional gust, and rain was no longer being driven into our faces and support was plentiful along the touchline.
Within the first few minutes it was obvious that this was most certainly a game that Stowmarket were capable of winning. We quickly established dominance at the scrums, dominance at the breakdown with our lineout being possibly the one area where Felixstowe were able to compete as the wind at times played havoc with this particular set piece.
Although dominant, we were still finding it difficult to complete the various try scoring opportunities which were created as our one major failure was to look after the ball. Chances galore were squandered as inappropriate pass were inappropriately delivered with the result that our scrum were afforded a considerable number of opportunities to practice their scrummaging. However Stowmarket were eventually able to put points on the scoreboard with second row, Nick kegge plunging over near the posts to score the only try (unconverted) of the first half.
Felixstowe did not take this score lying down and for a period of a good ten minutes they subjected our resolute defence to a searching examination of their credentials. We did not help ourselves as far too frequently our players gave away unnecessary penalties which Felixstowe were not able to take advantage of. Luckily though, all of our players responded well and stoutly defended their line refusing to yield to the pressure being exerted.
Half-time: - Felixstowe 0 Stowmarket 5
The second half saw yet more of the same from Stowmarket, good play undone by a lack of care. The half-time discussion had centred around the need for an improvement in our handling and playing in the right areas. Unfortunately we were not able to respond sufficiently well to these objectives and it wasn’t until Bradley Durrant plundered the ball from yet another Felixstowe error that Stowmarket were able to stretch their lead. With Captain Scott managing to convert this try, Stowmarket were confident that Felixstowe were not going to be able to stop this young and developing team from securing another promising victory.
With five colts playing and with three other recent colts in the team, was this the start of a development team that will soon be supplying players to our 1st XV? I sincerely hope so as it was impossible to identify these youngsters from the more established and experienced players.
In conclusion, if this squad could remain together with very few week-to-week changes, and if the majority could find a way to train together more frequently, we could see the renascence of the clubs fortunes continuing the good work of this past week-end which saw all three senior teams post victories for the first time this season.
