Stow 20 Reading 15
A strong second half effort secured this hard-fought win against a strong visiting side. Early signs were not promising as Reading took control from the start and battered the Stow defense especially in the tight. Stow conceded a penalty which was kicked to the corner, the resulting lineout was secured and driven over, try converted. Reading didn’t let up and soon had their second, a strong scrum pushed Stow back and when the ball was released a couple of missed tackles ended up with an unconverted try. Stow started to wake up and with the help of the good sized crowd began to string some plays together. A quickly taken penalty made good ground with HARRY GADEN on hand to score close to the posts, Dan Adams converted. The rest of the half was a bit disjointed with Reading being the only ones to score when they were awarded a penalty for a Stow infringement. Half time score 7 – 15 to the visitors. Stow had to up their game in the second half which they did, the forwards were now securing good ball and when the ball went wide chances were created. A second Dan Adams penalty clawed back 3 points then another quickly taken penalty saw full back Billy Maude join the line, he outsmarted the Reading defense to score in the corner, try not converted leaving the game poised at 15 points apiece. Reading were still threatening but the Stow defense was solid, Stow broke the deadlock when another searing break by Billy Maude set up NICK CAFEARO who beat the last man to score in the corner, conversion missed. The final 5 minutes of the game saw Stow defend heroically with some great tackling and turnovers which secured the much needed win.
No game next week then Stow travel to Reading Abbey on 19th October, kick off 2.30 pm.
