Strathie U18s go top of the Midlands League with seven out of eight wins!
Strathmore U18s deserved, and displayed, the most significant win in the history of Junior Rugby in Angus when they defeated Hillfoots.
This result ensured Strathie U18s went top of the table (Midlands League) – the first time an U18 side from Angus have ever been in such a position.
This was another outstanding performance by as committed a youth team as you will see.
The team commitment went on from start to the finish with Hillfoots shaken by the ferocity of the Strathie play. Strathie out rucked Hillfoots and regularly turned them over at the rucks. The back row “stormers” of Fergus Mitchell, Lee Alexander, Scott Strachan and Thomas Watson were in outstanding form with their speed and accuracy at the tackle area – Hillfoots struggled to cope with their efforts. The backs again were smart and decisive with their play, with man of the match Alex Milne tackling and chasing kicks with real commitment.
Strathmore piled the pressure on right from the kick off by hitting the rucks at pace and being first to the breakdown. This in turn led to a few penalties and in the 23rd minute Mark McQueen slotted over a penalty to put Strathmore in the lead 3-0. Hillfoots were dangerous at times but a try saving tackle from Alex Milne stopped them right in their tracks.
In the second half Strathmore playing slightly downhill, kicked for field position much more and it proved fruitful. Ewen Hart scored a try in the last 15 minutes to secure the win and Mark McQueen converted to seal a historic day for youth rugby in Forfar, and indeed, for Angus.
