TOO MANY ERRORS COST US

Sudbury travelled to Old Haberdashers for the first time in about forty years with a much depleted side due to sickness, injury and work commitments and although they put up a spirited display they were heavily defeated by a well-organized outfit.
OH kicked off and was soon into the Sudbury red zone but were forced into touch before they were able to touch down. They did convert a penalty in front of the posts and then score a converted try as the forwards picked and drove up the pitch after eleven minutes of play which had all been in the Sudbury half. After twenty minutes of play Shaun Smith broke from just inside the Sudbury half to score and Jack Datchler gave Sudbury the lead when Haberdashers knocked on and he picked up the loose ball to score from the half way line.
Missed tackles gave OH their next try and a well worked backs move right to left across the park saw their lead extended. The bonus point came when Sudbury’s usually good defence again missed tackles and the home side were in control eventually taking the score to 38 -14 at half time.
Sudbury were dominating the lineouts and holding their own in the scrums but they were being beaten to the break downs and being starved of possession. In the second half they spent more time in the oppositions half but handling errors and silly mistakes often ended positive moves.
A yellow card for Sudbury and a penalty lineout for the home side on their first real attacking move of the second half saw the forwards roll the maul from five metres to score after twenty minutes of play and again a couple of minutes later after another defensive error from Sudbury.
Paul Chaplin scored under the posts with a run from the halfway line when the ball went loose from a tackle on the half hour but Haberdashers replied immediately with another well worked backs move. Jonny Taylor gave Sudbury a try bonus point with a flying run down the right wing but then play was held up for five minutes with a neck injury to Smith with four minutes to play. The referee offered the final whistle to both captains but Sudbury opted to play on, a decision they were to rue, as Haberdashers put one final passage of play together to score as the final whistle sounded.
