Cup Runners Up

It has been a positive season for Sutton 4th team especially considering that, in the first couple of weeks of September there were some questions about the feasibility of the team.

The team started out with virtually all the players aged under 21, with a good number aged under 18 and playing their first full season in adult football. As the season has progressed they have been ably supported by the additions to the club of a few slightly more senior players in Gareth Champken, Andy Pittaway, John Green and Brad Stirk plus, on his return from injury, the experience of Ant Bisseker. There were a few occasions where the youthfulness has meant the game management was not quite there to see out games to a victory but others where despite their age, they performed admirably to take the win, a prime example being the cup victory against the third team when the average age of the finishing 11 was under 19.

A real pleasure has been, that throughout the season, the team has always tried to play a passing game, even when it wasn't always suited to the poor standard of the pitch surfaces at some away grounds. The first half performance at Silhill against their experienced 4th team is probably the best I have ever seen a team play at this level. Unfortunately the absence of a proper goalkeeper in a handful of games meant that the team was not quite able to put a challenge in for the title, but they finished a very credible 5th place in a competitive league, which with the exception of Olton Ravens, was of quite an even standard.

Obviously the highlight of the season was the run in the Norman Worskett cup which saw the team beat higher placed opposition on three occasions to reach the final. Unfortunately there, they came up against a very organised and experienced Silhill 3rd team and lost 3-2. However the team gave an excellent account of themselves, fighting back from 2-0 down to 2-2 but conceded a 3rd not long after without being able to find another equaliser.
