SWTFC come back from 2-0 down to win 5-2

Saffron Walden Town FC 5 – Enfield FC 2

16th March 2019

Jonathan Scripps

Walden came from behind to secure all three points at Catons Lane on Saturday, with the help of a second half hat-trick from winger Lewis Francis.
The Bloods started the game well, but had issues with the wind and struggled to create many chances. It was Enfield who unexpectedly stuck first, 15 minutes into the match, after Matt Thoma latched onto a defensive mistake and slotted the ball passed O’Sullivan and into the back of the net.

This shook up Walden and they continued to push for an equaliser, but again struggled to get into their usual attacking rhythm, and 10 minutes later found themselves 2-0 down. The goal was scored by Matt Thoma, after he struck the ball perfectly after Tyler Fowles shot was deflected off the line by Matt Frew, which silenced the home crowd.

Walden certainly didn’t give up, and just before half time Ashley Skeggs bravely dived between three Enfield defenders and headed the ball into the back of the net.

The half time team talk must have been one to remember, as Walden certainly came out a different team and the fans sensed calmness is their play.

Midfielder Lee Sawyer brought the Bloods level 8 minutes into the second half with a perfectly placed lob over the keeper. The fans held their breath as they watched the ball float over the keeper and dropped into the net, which was followed by a huge cheer.

The Bloods certainly were now in charge of the match, as man of the match Lewis Francis put the Bloods into the lead. In the build up to the goal Francis fell to the ground with the ball at his feet, but was determined to get his shot in. He swung his leg and slotted the ball passed the Enfield keepers outstretched arm.

Francis competed his hat-trick with two more goals on the 72nd and 75th minute. His second goal was a skilful chip over the keeper.
For his third goal; he cleverly pushed the ball around the keeper and scored the goal which secured all three points. Lewis celebrated each goal with the crowd, which the fans certainly appreciated.

It was a great day for Lewis Francis as at the end of the match he was awarded player of the month by Jackie Nash. A few weeks ago Francis accidently hit Jackie’s wrist with the ball and broke it. As you can imagine Lewis was distraught when he realised what had happened but
Jackie managed to see the funny side and all was forgiven.

MOTM: Lewis Francis

Next the first team travel to Barkingside FC on Saturday 23rd March and the reserves welcome Sawbridgeworth Town reserves to Catons Lane.
