Our History

Tír an Iúir, in Irish is the 'Land of the Yew Trees’; the late Frankie Byrne, father of former Terenure manager, Fran Byrne, founded the club in 1970. Frankie was the driving force behind the club and gave over 36 Years of his life in devotion to promoting its interests. From the original first Schoolboy team which he was instrumental in setting up, the club can now boast a healthy membership of 4 adult teams in the UCFL, an LSL Senior side and an over 35’s side – along with 18 teams from Womens, schoolboys and girls and Academy based sides..

While the club went through a lean period during the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was revitalised in 1994. A number of ex-players had gone to play with Dodderpark Rangers, a club founded in the late 1970s and which had joined the UCFL around 1980. In 1993, Dodderpark Rangers merged with Rathfarnham FC, another long established UCFL team, founded in 1972. This merged club was then relaunched in 1994 as the new Terenure FC, adopting the old green and black colours and establishing a presence in the VEC Sportsground in Terenure.

Clearly, since the founding of the original club in 1970, it has gone through many changes and developments. Hundreds of players have donned the “Green and Black” that is still retained to the present day. Managers, coaches and volunteers have played their part in keeping the club going over all these years. The club has served the greater Terenure area, while also attracting players and managers from all over the city of Dublin and beyond. The attraction of playing with the club is for “participation, friendship and most importantly enjoyment”. The club can easily pride itself on this and for the past 43 years this is what has made Terenure Football Club the club it is today. What differentiates Terenure FC from the rest is the style on which the club philosophy insists - possession football characterised by short passing and movement, working the ball through various channels.

Terenure narrowly avoided relegation from Div 1 on the last day of the 09/10 season. A change in management, overseen by current Chairman John Walsh, was about to occur. That summer is when current manager James Claffey took over the running of the entire men’s senior section. The sports science lecturer and sport psychologist wanted to change everything about the way the men’s section was run. It was a tough job to try and amalgamate 2 senior teams into one identity that had been separate for almost ten years. He took two teams and made one squad. Terenure FC started the new season in div one with the new manager in fine form and went 11 games unbeaten, only to finish second narrowly behind Amber Celtic on the final day. They gained promotion to the Premier Division in that season and reached the Richard Knight final, beating Brayzil and Glasnaoin along the way - only to lose 2-1 in the final to Trinity Corinthians. In their first season in the Premier Division Terenure pushed Clontarf all the way to the end of the season and in 12/13, completed a historic Treble, remaining unbeaten in the League in the process. This never before achieved feat put the club in the upper echelons of junior football.

Today sees the club compete in 6 divisions as a Senior club, with a membership of 100+ players and coaches. The Senior club is run by a committee of club coaches and managers and is thriving with new players joining from all corners of the city, and beyond.
