Having only played the league game on Saturday, it was case of here we go again in the Floodlit Cup first round tie at the Tomlin Personnel Park. As expected, both sides made changes to the starting line up from the weekend (Teversal 3 and Rossington Main Reserves 4) so it set an air of the unknown on what to expect on a Tuesday evening that turned out to be a cold, blustery and wet autumnal evening.
The game started of where Saturday’s game finished with Teversal dominating the early possession, with the visitors losing Jack Payne to injury after 10 minutes to injury being a hindrance to their plans.
Even though Teversal were controlling the game, it took until the 13th minute to create the first opening of note when Macaskill got on the end of a long searching ball to cross first team to the unmarked Parfitt who also elected to go for goal with his first touch but guided the effort wide.
Macaskill again was the thorn in the Rossington side when he cut in from the left to beat Denton but also wide of the target. The lively wide player moved to the right an did the same, this time forcing Denton into a smart save low to his right.
The opening goal, that turned out to be the winner came on 29 minutes, when the impressive Ferreday won a midfield dual to then deliver inch perfect ball into the path of Macaskill who turned Cummings one way then the other before firing across Denton into the bottom corner open the scoring.
With the weather conditions worsening it was starting to have an influence on the game, which became a factor in Teversal maintain the pressure. With some good defending and an excellent showing from the visitors Keeper, Denton having an inspiring night. This was best shown when Onyeani intercepted Dumitrescu pass before driving forward to then pick out Parfitt whose excellent first touch that created the space away from Fletcher, but again Denton saved well at the foot of his near post.
The efforts of Rossington in the first half to keep the score at 1-0 at the break was an excellent achievement, that gave then the confidence to come out and have a go in the second half. So it was now the host turn to see how they would handle the visitors and the worsening conditions with the wind and rain getting stronger as the half played out.
Even with more ball, the visitors found it difficult to create any clear-cut chances and the Teversal rearguard protected their goal with confidence. The was several scares where the ball flashed across the goal, but Winfield in the Teversal wasn’t tested beyond routine saves.
As the game was coming to its conclusion, the weather became another threat the Teversal lead, as the rain became heavier and had it come earlier the game like this, the game certainly wouldn’t have finished, but as the ninety minutes ticked over and shortly after the final whistle, Teversal found themselves in the next round.
