“A Day That Will Be Easily Forgot”

Traditionally Easter is a defining time in Football, with both sides only having their own aims to achieve, it was Glasshoughton who went home the happier in a game that will easily fade away from the memory.

The strong wind was unusually blowing from the Carnarvon Street end of the ground to the Trails End rather than normal across the pitch. Add the overcast conditions it gave a feel for an autumn afternoon rather than spring.

The visitors played with the wind at their backs with then initially over hitting passes or the home defence holding firm against the wave after wave of attacks. This after the home side had created the first effort with a good one two between Weaver and Dickinson saw the latter greeted by an alert Suttle who was quick off his line to make the save.

On 15 minutes, a Scothern through ball to Fawcett saw Fisher put a needless challenge in when it looked like the defender was in charge in an area of no danger before putting in a rash challenge that was an easy decision for the Officials to award a penalty for. Josh Morley calmly slotted the spot kick home to give the Blues the lead.

The initiative was clearly with the visitors and a searching cross from Poskitt found Scothern who headed over when he really should have doubled the lead. But they failed to take advantage of the wind or the possession due to solid defending lead by the Tevie Skipper Paul Staniforth.

Teversal`s disappointment was made even worse when Brad Cox was lost with a suspected broken nose after a collision of heads from a contested free kick. The Tevie camp was happy to hear the half time whistle so they could regroup hoping to get back into the game. Glasshoughton had their casualty too losing goalkeeper Mark Suttle who also had a trip to A&E for an injury sustained late in the first half.

The second half started with the roles reversed with Teversal having the possession but the Glasshoughton rear-guard stood firm to protect the replacement Keeper Archer who really had nothing but routine duties to contend with.
Any hopes that Teversal had of getting back in the game was killed off in the 63rd minute when Josh Morley fed the ball out to Ryan Poskitt whose speculative effort was held up, swerved in the wind and then bounced to beat the unfortunate Sheppard to double the Blues lead.

The final 27 minutes was nothing short of torture, Glasshoughton was happy to protect their lead which they did without being tested. Dean Short brought himself on to try and an improve a Teversal performance that has to be one of the lowest points of the season, but there was no change and the downpour at the end of the game became a bigger talking point than the game along with the wellbeing of both Cox and Suttler.

The big question for the Tevie Boys now, “will they let a season that has shown so much improvement and brought back some belief be allowed to fade away in to a disappointing conclusion” or will they show some character and finish with the pride they have shown for the majority of the season. Either way the FA Cup dream now looks like fading and being unfulfilled.

Next up for Teversal is an away game on Monday 28th March 2016 when they travel to Grimsby Borough. Then on Saturday 2nd April 2016 Westella VIP are the visitors to Carnarvon Street with a 3:00pm kick off. Both games are in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One.
