“Tevie Show Their Worth”

After a string of bad results the Teversal camp went into this game hoping to find some of the pre-season optimism with a positive performance and picking up three points. The host knew to achieve that they had to be at their best against a Dronfield Town side that have had a solid start to their campaign.

The perfect start came the home sides way as they took a 1-0 in the second minute when Danny Fletcher’s deflected effort from outside the area saw the ball loop up with the visitors keeper Knight electing to allow the ball to bounce before gathering it giving Danny Bacon the time to nip in to loop a header over keeper to finish despite Darlow effort to clear on line.

After Teversal dominating the early exchange the game became more of an even contest with Dronfield forcing their first notable effort on 17 minutes from a scramble in the Teversal penalty area when a fierce effort was blocked by the determined Teversal back line. Then at the other end a free kick from the Tevie midfielder Bamford delivered deep into the visitor’s penalty area caused problems, the ball ran out to Fletcher who crossed to Weaver who fired over the bar from close range.

On 19 minutes Fletcher was sent clear by Dickinson, but Knight was quick off his line to make an excellent save with his legs after spreading himself to make the goal look small. Nine minutes later though it was 2-0, a quick break saw Fletcher combining with Mitchell who laid off to Dickinson to release Fletcher to cut in from the left to be fouled by Mintof as the defender attempted tackle saw him miss the ball with an outstretched leg that brought down the striker. Fletcher took the spot kick and calmly sent Knight the wrong way.

The second goal increased the confidence in the Tevie camp and it was no surprise when the lead was increased to 3-0 on 40 minutes. Again it was Fletcher who was the thorn in the Dronfield side as he was sent clear by Sargent, but this time Fletcher got the better of Knight to finish with aplomb.

Dronfield had a couple of free kicks from 20 yards before the break in an identical position slightly to the right of centre of goal. The first effort saw the Tevie wall blocking Mawbey’s drive and then the second attempt was taken by Wood who beat the wall but also the far post without testing Turton in the Tevie goal.

After the break the expected Dronfield reaction saw them come out looking threatening but for the early possession they failed to break down the solid looking Tevie defence and didn’t turn that possession in to goal scoring opportunities. At the other end it was Teversal’s turn to have free kick from 20 yards, a far more creative effort straight from the training ground led to Dickinson pulling back to Fletcher who fired over from 10 yards.

The host controlled the game by keeping the majority of the possession but on 67 minutes Turton made an excellent full length save going full length to his right to deny Wilson pulling one back for Dronfield with an effort from distance after just coming off the subs bench. The remainder of the game saw Teversal continuing the possession game by producing a workmanlike performance to keep Dronfield out of harm’s way, playing to standard that is expected from arguable the best squad at Carnarvon Street in many years.

The Teversal camp will be delighted with the result, but also the performance that ensured once the lead had been gained it was never in any real doubt that it wouldn’t be held to pick up a much welcomed and needed three points.

Next up for Teversal is an away trip for another Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One fixture when they travel to Hull to face Hall Road Rangers on Saturday 1st October 2016 with a 3:00pm kick off.
