“Assured Tevie Take The Points”

A week in football is always seen as a long time, with Teversal going into the game hoping to put the disappointment and humiliation behind then from the previous weeks Buildbase FA Vase exit at Lutterworth Town. So the host could be excused for their tentative and nervous start to a game that was initially played at a slow tempo.

In the opening 45 minutes both sides created openings but both Josh Turton and Kinnerley in the respected goals had only to perform routine duties to keep their clean sheets intact. Dean Short will have been pleased to see his Teversal charges have the better of the possession and laid the foundations to build their confidence up to move into the second period hoping to up the tempo and turn the possession into goals.

Equally Borrowash would have seen enough to feel that they could claim something from the game, so it made for an intriguing encounter to see who would pick up the mantle to take the game by the scruff of the neck and control the game.

We didn’t have to wait long to find out when after only a minute of the restart the Teversal skipper Khyle Sargent intercepted a loose pass by the host to make a strong run from midfield before unleashing an effort from 20 yards into top corner with the Borrowash keeper Kinnerley rooted as the unstoppable effort hit the back of the net. Borrowash response was immediate when they counteracted with an effort from Greene that saw Josh Turton make an excellent save to keep his sides lead intact.

There was a higher tempo in the second period which saw the home side’s dominance in terms of possession being maintained. However on 54 minutes they doubled their lead to put a truer reflection on the game and take the sting out of the threat of the visitors. Dave Cockerill was the architect of the visitor’s downfall with a defence splitting ball that found James McCann who took the ball in his stride to enter the Borrowash 18 yard box to finish with confidence despite the attention of a Borrowash defender.
Having just been the hero, James McCann then gave away what looked like a needless free kick some 20 yards from goal. Borrowash's Fitzhugh produced an excellent effort that Josh Turton was equal to by tipping the fierce effort over the bar.

On the hour mark any wind that was still in the Borrowash sails must have been deflated when a superb cross from the Teversal right by Kabango invited Fitzhugh to race into the 18 yard box to power a header that cleared the bar. Fitzhugh was the centre of all things positive for Vics, with the midfielder again sending another fierce effort straight at Josh Turton who elected to parry in the now wet conditions with the rain falling.

On 81 minutes Teversal put the game out of Borrowash's reach when they made it 3-0. Dave Cockerill had the time and space to break in the visitors penalty area with Kinnerley advancing off his line to save the effort with an outstretched leg with Danny Fletcher finishing from the rebound. The icing was put on the Teversal cake when on 85 minutes a patient piece of possession play by Kurt Bamford, Luke Bacon and Dave Cockerill saw the latter pick out Wilkinson’s timely run from midfielder to finish with aplomb leaving Kinnerley no chance.

A clean sheet and a quartet of goals was the tonic and positive reaction the Teversal Management requested and the players delivered, something they hope will now become an habit and show a level consistency that sees them sitting in the higher echelons of the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division.

Next up for Teversal is a trip to Stapenhill on Tuesday 3rd October in the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division with a 7:45pm kick off. That is followed by the visit of Barrow Town on Saturday 7th October with a 3:00pm kick off at Carnarvon Street.
