Calverton MW Res 0 – 2 Teversal Res

Today’s match saw a break from the league fixtures and introduced us into the first game of the Nottingham Intermediate County Cup. The teams both reside in the same league and are separated by three points but Calverton have played two games less, so on paper it looked as though it would be a close game.
Teversal started the game in a positive manner and soon had the Calverton defence under pressure when Rob Orton received the ball outside the box took the ball about 6 yards in the penalty area and his shot was just wide of the right post.
In the 8th minute Danny Pearson was tackled in the penalty area and it looked like a penalty to all but the referee. Teversal having the majority of the play could not find the net and had kept Calverton to a couple of chances.
On the 18th minute the referee decided to caution Michael Hainesworth for what looked to be a soft tackle, especially as just 10 seconds earlier, Danny Pearson was late on a Calverton player on the halfway line. It may be the ref thought Michael had committed both offences.
Both sides had chances to score but could not find the net. Teversal with a corner on the 22nd minute went straight through the crowded area with another corner in the 29th minute caught by the keeper.
The second caution of the game came on the 32 minute when Calverton’s J Warner brought down from behind Jordon Schofield on the halfway line.
38 minutes in, the ball with Ryan Baldwin in his own half, passes out to right wing finding Danny Pearson, who then passed to Simon Groves, who chipped the keeper but just went over the bar.
Two minutes later Simon Groves found himself on the right wing, took on the left full back and a good cross found Rob Orton on the far post but his effort went over.
Teversal’s chances of progressing took a turn for the worst when Ki Smith was dismissed for a jump tackle in the 44th minute.
With a player short for the second half the manager wanted to keep the pressure on the Calverton defence, as we controlled the majority of the first half, so a formation change was made with the two wingers now playing in the middle so the full backs could attack if the opportunity arose. So we now started the second half in a 4-3-2 formation.
The balance of play now swung to Calverton and we had to defend for the first 5 minutes. Then a clearance from defence Danny Pearson won the ball well in own half, carried the ball into the Calverton half, passed to Simon Groves, he ran 20 yards to have a one on one with the keeper, the keeper saved, but Danny had kept running and he picked up the rebound to score the first goal.
With the midfield and defence still working hard to keep Calverton at bay we managed to score a second goal in the 65th minute, when once again, Danny Pearson from within his own half played a long ball up field on the right side to find Simon Groves, he took on and went past the full back to riffle home a great right foot shot into the left side of the goal.
The second goal appeared to deflate Calverton and we started to get more chances in the last 20 minutes. One of those chances saw a good move on the right side when Danny Fox played a one two with Simon Groves who then found Ryan Baldwin who’s shot was just wide.
Max Curzon was introduced to the game to bring on some fresh legs upfront and long balls for him to chase gave the other a breather. In the 81st Max found himself with a one on one with the keeper and just when he had arrived in the 18 yard box a tackle from behind brought him down, what should have been a penalty was again waved away by the referee. A couple of minutes later a similar situation but this about 30 yards from goal and a free kick was awarded. The resulting free kick was a shot on goal from Jason Markell but it was easily saved by the keeper.
Again a good performance by all, especially the back four, but a special mention must go to Jordon Schofield who had another exceptional performance at the back. (P.S. good tactics by the manager at half time)
