Normanton's goal worthy of deserve point for Thackley.

Thackley 1 Yorkshire Amateur 1 – Match Report.

NCEL Premier Division – Saturday 7th December 2019.

Thackley’s last Saturday game at Dennyfield was seven weeks ago, Yorkshire Amateur were the visitors this weekend and supporters were looking forward to a competitive encounter. The ‘Ammers’ are one of the favourites for promotion this year but have stumbled somewhat recently, winning just once in their last three league games. Ross Daly and captain Matt Dempsey were two players that had played for Thackley in the past. Thackley had been out of action for over two weeks, their last game was the three all draw against Barton. Ryan Basi returned to the defence after injury, Matt Hall was back and Jack Normanton was in the starting eleven.

The first fifteen minutes produced little in the way of goal mouth action but showed both teams were looking to play football. The away side had the ball in the net on the quarter hour following a corner but keeper Luke Wilson had been impeded and the goal was ruled out. Ammers lost Ashley Flynn to injury and Ben Grech-Brooksbanks and Jack Normanton both had shots which were wide before the latter went close to giving Thackley the lead, heading just wide from Grech-Brooksbank cross. The away side looked dangerous going forward but the Thackley defence was holding firm. Both Matt Hall and Kieran Thompson picked up bookings before Thackley survived a five minute onslaught. The ball rattled the Thackley bar following a free kick, Wilson saved a Matthew Sykes shot destined for the top corner and Jack Boyle upended Stephen Smith in the box to give the away side a penalty, again Wilson was the saviour, saving Sykes’ spot kick. James Rothel and Paul Whiteley both picked up a booking for innocuous tackles from a referee who seemed hell bent on treating every Thackley challenge as one that warranted a yellow card. Ammers skipper Matt Dempsey picked up the away sides first booking and spent nearly ten minutes in the sin bin, not for a challenge, but comments made to the referee. Just before the break Normanton went close to opening the scoring, rounding the keeper, who had rushed to the edge of the box, his shot was cleared off of the line by a defender. Neither side had managed a breakthrough in an even first forty five minutes.

Half time: Thackley 0 Yorkshire Amateur 0.

Asa Mitchell pounced on an Ed Wilcynswki poor clearance early in the second half but the danger was cleared before the Ammers took the lead. Ryan Basi was the fifth Thackley player booked, for a challenge on the edge of the box, Sykes found the top corner with the well directed free kick. Simon Poole came on for Boyle before Rothel’s shot/cross was inches away from finding the top corner. Ross Daly fired wide after getting clear and Normanton’s shot followed a similar pattern after he outpaced the away defenders, the game was moving from end to end. Thackley introduced fresh legs, Owen Murphy and Ray Sibanda replacing Rothel and Hall. Sykes should have made the game safe for the Ammers but his close range effort cleared the bar before Thackley got the goal their play deserved. Thompson hoisted the ball over the away defence, Normanton, seeing Wilcynswki off his line, coolly looped it over the stranded keeper. Thackley picked up another couple of bookings before the end, Sibanda and Grech-Brooksbanks, it’s days and officials like these that make the fair play league a bit of a farce. There was no more scoring and the game finished level.

Full time: Thackley 1 Yorkshire Amateur 1.

In the end it had been an entertaining game and a fair result but one that both teams will say they should have won.
