After good performances in their opening fixtures, the Thackley team travelled to Wetherby confident of a cup upset. The first half was one to forget as Wetherby took an early lead and capitalised on sloppy Thackley play to lead 3-0 at half time.
The Thackley girls were not disheartened and were still confident of turning the scoreline into a positive result. 7 minutes into the second half, Abbie Thompson scored Thackley’s first goal with a great header followed soon after by another header from Taylor Rushworth. At this point Thackley knew they had a foothold in the game but soon after Wetherby scored after a goalmouth scramble from a corner. 4-2 Wetherby. From this point in the game, Thackley dominated. A third goal came from another corner and another header - this time from Lois Cooper. 4-3 Wetherby with over 20 minutes left in the game. Soon after, an unfortunate injury to full back Chloe Abbott resulted in a short stoppage in play which allowed the girls time to re-group. Megan Schofield was rewarded with an equalising goal in the 79th minute, showing great determination after the goalkeeper spilled a tricky cross from Annie Nicol. From this point there was only going to be one winner and in the 83rd minute Lois Cooper wrapped up the game with her 5th goal in 2 games smashing the ball past the goalkeeper after a good ball from Taylor Rushworth. The last 7 minutes seemed like 17 minutes but the Thackley girls were not letting the lead slip after a performance full of character and team spirit. The final whistle sounded followed by a sigh of relief from Thackley players, management and supporters alike. A great result after a being 3-0 down at half time!
