Youngsters played their hearts out!

For many of these children, this is their first time pulling on school colours and they all took great pride in representing their school

Around 140 children from 11 local schools were welcomed to the 8th Thatcham Tornadoes Infant Schools Football Festival on Saturday. This festival is sponsored by Newbury based company, SPX Flow, and is now firmly established as part of the annual Thatcham Festival schedule; an event the club, teachers and parents look forward to each October.

All the teams played in round robin group games so plenty of action for the parents to cheer on. There were goals galore, saves aplenty and the odd penalty too! For many of these children, this is their first time pulling on school colours and they all took great pride in representing their school. Everyone was a winner on the day and we were delighted to be joined by Thatcham Town Mayor, Councillor Mike Cole, who took time out of his busy festival schedule to present all the players with a Participation Medal. The Mayor also presented Curridge Falcons with the Festival’s Spirit of Fair Play Award.

Thatcham Tornadoes were delighted to present a cheque for £210 to The Mayor for his nominated charities, Daisy’s Dream and Young People and Children First. This money had been raised on the Thatcham Tornadoes SPX Speedshot at Thatcham Family Fun Day in June, thanks to the generosity of everyone who stepped up to kick footballs to raise money for charity.

Festival Organiser, Peter Walker commented, “we were delighted to have such a bright, sunny morning for this year’s festival and it’s been another amazing day thanks to the continued support of the local schools and teachers. It was fantastic to welcome a couple of new schools to our festival and we hope to see them return next year. It’s an event everyone in Thatcham Tornadoes look forward to and great to hear the teachers do too. The festival provides a rare opportunity for the very youngest children to represent their school and play their hearts out on the pitch. The smiles on their faces, win, lose or draw show just how much they enjoyed playing football today. The referees were so encouraging with all the players throughout the morning and were very impressed with the standard of play.” Peter added, “I would just like to thank The Mayor and all the teachers, referees and club volunteers for giving up their time to make the morning such a success. Thanks also go to SPX Flow for sponsoring the event and Francis Baily PTA for providing refreshments”.
