The Trident RFC traveled to Austin, Texas on May 4th for the USA Club Rugby National Championship Series. Last year, the Tridents were eliminated in their Semifinal Match at the NCS. The coaches and players made a vow, not only to return to the NCS next season, but win a National Title. That is exactly what they did. Their first opponent was the Indianapolis Impalas RFC. The Trident had a comfortable lead going into halftime. Not allowing the Impalas a single point. In the 2nd half, the Impalas scored 3 tries, but it was not enough. The Tridents won by a score of 34-21.
The NCS Finals would be the Trident RFC versus the Oceanside Chiefs of Southern California. The Tridents are usually thought of as being an offensive side, putting up huge numbers against their opponents. This year, they added defense to their repertoire. While scoring an average of 50 points per game, the Tridents only allowed an average of 11 points to be scored against them all season long.
In the Finals, they would put on a defensive masterclass. Winger Blake Pereda opened the scoring for the Tridents with a try in the 3rd minute mark. The Tridents dominated the match from there on. The Final Score was 38-10. The Chiefs were only able to score a penalty goal and a converted try as time expired. It was now official. The Tridents are no longer the best rugby club in Florida, but the best in the entire nation! The MVP award was given to fullback Francisco Perello for a brilliant display of kicking, tackling, and scoring. He finished as the leading scorer of the match with two tries and one penalty goal.
The Trident RFC would like to thank everyone who made this historic season possible, Coaches, Officers, Executive Committee, and players for their hours and hours of hard work making us Champions. Thank you to all of our significant others, families, and friends for tolerating and supporting us throughout the season. And thank you to our legion of Old Boys throughout the world who support us spiritually and financially. Running a successful rugby club is not easy or cheap, so your support is invaluable in helping our players stay focused on training and playing to the fullest of their ability.
