Season ends with a whimper....

The 2's made the 1/2 hour trip down the M20 and upon arrival at the Folkestone Leisure Centre, it was clear to see that there had been alot of rainfall in the area. The wicket was very dark in colour despite feeling relatively firm. The toss would therefore be crucial and to start the season as it begun, the skipper called incorrectly and his team were invited to bat first.

The players barely had time to take a seat on the coffee shop balcony before Howard Waters was bowled 2nd ball of the innings to a delivery which nipped back sharply. Kraig Corke followed in similar fashion shortly after and when Nick Waite dragged a wide ball onto his stumps, the innings was in disarray. However, conditions were far from easy, as not only was there excessive seam movement but the pitch was very low in bounce, which made scoring runs very hard work.

Jason White and Dan Taylor battled hard for a while and made the rest of the team think getting to 150 was possible. However Jason mistimed a drive to be caught at mid-on. Ollie Hills made one and was caught at slip, with skipper Laurence Waters bowled next ball for a golden duck to a delivery which nipped back from a short length and hit the stumps half way up. The one plus of playing cricket with a coffee shop in situ is that one can purchase a vanilla latte and do a lap of the ground, contemplating what might have been after being out first ball.

Nigel Mullarkey, in his final league innings for The Mote, strode to the crease with the team 44-6. He and Dan Taylor put on a decent partnership in the cirumstance with Nige making scoring look relatively easy compared to the rest of the batsman. Nige's final innings came to an end without playing a shot, padding up to the off-spinner to be plumb LBW, Nige almost walking before the umpire raised his dreaded digit. Young Conor Davis obviously hadn't watched Nige's dismissal, as he too shoulder arms to the off spinner to be bowled. Rhys Williams was able to lend some support to Dan Taylor, but when DT was adjudged LBW, the race was almost run. Rhys was last to be dismissed, leaving Folkestone only 98 to win.

Cricket is a funny old game and low scores have been defended before - but not on this day. The tone was almost set as the first ball went for 5 wides. The 4th over went for 16 as Folkestone came out batting as if it were a T20 game. They rode their luck with a couple of dropped catches and a missed stumping. However take nothing away from Folkestone, they gave us quite a hiding, sending us home with 0 points. The only wicket takers were Gents and Rhys as Folkestone knocked off the total in 17 overs.

So as the 2's sat in the changing room, trying to avoid being stabbed in the back or skewered in the head by the strategically placed coat hooks, it was a sad way to end what had overall been a pretty good season.

However, 4th place was a great result in the end and something to aspire to better next season.
