A journey that added much to a positive goal difference.
This week Thirsk 2nds travelled to Huddersfield to play Huddersfield Dragons 2nds. Thirsk were a little slow to start and conceded an early goal but soon got their game going and equalised after a good run down the right wing from Marnie who pulled a perfect ball back to the penalty spot for Lynne to finish in the bottom corner. Thirsk were now pressurising Dragons who could not cope and conceded several short corners. Thirsk took the lead from one of these short corners after a worked routine was finished off by Marnie lifting the ball into the net on the right post. Thirsk further increased their lead with a strong strike at goal deflected into the net by Lynne. The half time score was 3-1 to Thirsk.
Huddersfield did have occasional attacks but Molly and the mother/daughter duo of Kate and Oona defended strongly and passed the ball into midfield for Thirsk to counter attack. The midfield of Grace, Marnie, Hannah, Yaz and Naomi moved the ball well and Jess and Fern made good runs down the right wing causing Huddersfield lots of problems. Thirsk scored another goal from a short corner routine which Marnie again finished off. Hayley then got in on the act when a cross from the right wing across the goal was dummied by Lynne and Hayley further behind on the left post pushed the ball past the Huddersfield goalkeeper. Thirsk finished the scoring when Fern again beat the goalkeeper on the left hand side to make the final score 6-1. Huddersfield did have one great chance to get a goal back but Thirsk goalkeeper Chelsea, with little to do in the second half, made a sliding save and cleared with her stick. Hannah B again had a good game closing players down with her constant running and hassling and was unlucky not to add her name to the scoresheet.
Player of the match was awarded to Marnie.
