5 January Thirsk Men 3 v Boston Spa 4
By Patrick Hunt
Thirsk had a strong squad for a rearranged match against Boston Spa 4 and started well, dominating possession but unable to create meaningful chances in the opposition D, trying to beat players through pace or skill rather than passing to available Thirsk players. BS picked up 2 goals in quick succession against the run of play, which unsettled the Thirsk team, and added a third before half time.
Thirsk started the second half with a re-shuffled line-up, and were rewarded with a goal by Patrick Hunt
, first to react to an initial save by the opposition keeper. Further opportunities followed for Thirsk, with Boston Spa forced deeper reducing their chance to attack on the break. It was however BS who secured the win with a well worked goal leaving Andy Watson
no chance to react from a close range deflection. Thirsk managed a consolation goal from a short corner with the ball returned to the injecter, laid on for the advancing Hugo Merchie
to score, but unfortunately time ran out.Jeremy Barker
was awarded a green card for a clumsy tackle, but redeemed himself with a good all round display across the midfield and a successful trial in defence. Ben Scaling added quality and speed of thought playing out of central defence, but the Man of the Match was Fred Hunt
, for his positional play, solid tackling and work rate at wing back.
Final score 2-4.
