Thornes Juniors U18’s vs Nanu U18’s

Thornes went into their final pre-season friendly looking to build on their recent 3 game unbeaten run and take some strong form into their league opener next Sunday. Once again Thornes brought strong numbers, with a squad of 19 looking to impress on a sunny afternoon at Queens Drive.

Shortly after kick off Thornes began to get hold of the ball and dominate possession. Newcomer Emmanuel Okoro had the first clear chance of the game, but after being played through he dragged his shot wide of the target. Shortly afterwards though he did give Thornes the lead. On 12 minutes, following good pressure from the pacy Jed Firth, Emmanuel Okoro slotted home past the Nanu keeper.

Thornes continued to create further chances through their wide players Jed Firth and the tenacious Alex Tunningley. In the centre of midfield, captain Josh Cameron-Edwards and newcomer Ben Snaith kept feeding the wide players to keep the pressure on. On 30 minutes this continued pressure paid off. Following a corner wide on the right, Jed Firth and Iwo Waszyk worked the ball to left back Spencer Turner just outside the box. After getting the ball out of his feet Turner let fly with a sweetly struck left foot strike that arrowed into the net to double Thornes advantage.

Nanu were restricted to very few clear openings. When they did breach the Thornes back line they found Thornes keeper Mateusz Aniolkowski on top form. Despite their continued dominance, Thornes had to settle for a 2-0 advantage at half time.

Immediately after the break Thornes got straight back into their rhythm. This time following a slick passing move involving right back Brook Slater and Jed Firth, who fed pacy striker Alex Nolan in the right channel. Nolan continued towards the byeline and crossed for Alex Tunningley to poach Thornes third goal of the afternoon. This early goal re-established the pattern of play that was set in the first half, with Thornes very much being on top. During the second half, Thornes made regular substitutions to give match time to all of their squad. These disruptions, combined with some stubborn defending from Nanu no doubt contributed to Thornes not adding further goals till late in the half. On 80 minutes, a Jed Firth corner was headed goalward by Emmanuel Okoro. Despite the keeper saving the initial header, Okoro pounced on the rebound to slot home his second of the afternoon and Thornes fourth. Thornes continued to press until the final whistle and this paid off in the very last minute. The busy Alex Nolan brought a long ball down and attempted to play in Spencer Turner. Unfortunately he was beaten to the ball but the Nanu clearance ricocheted off Turners knee and over the Nanu keeper to round off the scoring, giving Thornes a well deserved 5-0 victory.
