Our U11 girls played their first game of the season today. Mellor were the hosts.
Due to exams weekend and Covid issues, we were only able to field 11.
Timperley welcomed Gracey, Kitty and Aaliyah in their first ever game for the club.
The first quarter started before we got going! Timperley went 0-4 down very quickly! It would have been more if it hadn’t been for an excellent display of goalkeeping from Harriet.
Timperley started to find their feet and got into the game. A few positional changes into Q2 saw Henrietta strengthen the midfield and change the flow of the game. Lexi was prolific in attack, and the Timperley goals started to come.

Timperley finished the half 6-7 down, having staged a remarkable comeback.
We stayed in touch throughout Q3. Aggie had a turn in goal and did very well. Harriet turned defender and added to some good work from Evie and Gracey. Gracey’s running was superb, many times carrying the ball out of defence and always tracking the Mellor players, and matching them for pace. A very strong debut!
Aaliyah and Kitty. also in their first game worked well in midfield. Aaliyah ran tirelessly in attack and defence, whilst Kitty showed some great judgment with some well timed passes.

Gigi arrived a little late, but made a good impact in defence, working well with the others to slow Mellor from adding to their tally.

One of my favourite moments in the game was to see Isla chase down the Mellor defender to win the ball behind the goal, and then make a great pass to Jess, who was in the perfect position to score! Well done Jess for getting on the score sheet and well done Isla for a hard earned assist!
Jess also made a great assist to Lexi for another goal.
It’s great to see girls running with the ball, but it is these inter-plays and well worked assists that then lead to goals that we need to work on! More plays like this please!

Ultimately, Mellor edged it, and it was a deserved win.
We need to improve our HUNGER for the ball all over the field, but especially in defence.
That means that we need to be faster to the breakdown.
But that all comes with practice and experience! Today was a good team performance from a group of girls who had not played as a team before. It was a good base to move forward from.
The girls improved as the game progressed and never gave up - 2 very important traits.

Well done to Henrietta for being chosen by the Mellor team as MVP!

I do think that every single player should be proud of themselves today! Well done team!
