Golden goal winner.

What a brilliant game the girls had this afternoon. It’s been a tough season so far, but this fantastic group has continued to progress as a team and enjoy its lacrosse along the way.

The reward is a place in the plate cup final at the flags weekend following a thrilling goalden-goal extra-time winner against Heaton Mersey after the game ended 10-10 at full-time. Please keep Fri 8th May (bank holiday) free if you can for the final at Wilmslow.

I was determined to track some of our defensive stats in this game, because the defence doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. However, it was such a good game, and so close from the start to the finish that I completely forgot! So instead, it suffices to say that Kelly, Karina, Sophie and Natalya were excellent – really strong defending whilst giving away very few fouls, and superbly backed-up as usual by Rebekah who made some crucial saves.

The midfield of Jess, Elsa and Elena had a tough game against Heaton Mersey’s best players, but it’s a credit to all 3 of them that overall they came out on top. We won possession from the draw more often and enjoyed more possession overall. It was really hard work in midfield but they didn’t slow down at all. The end-to-end nature of extra time was testament to that.

Niamh, Annabelle and Tilly all had strong games. They helped control possession at key times, got key goals, but also defended from the front – Niamh’s perseverance leading to to Jess’s goalden goal.

Well done to you all. The stats I did remember to capture are goals / assists below:
Elena – 2/0
Niamh – 1/3
Jess – 3/4
Elsa – 2/2
Sophie – 0/1
Tilly – 3/0
