I could offer commiserations go to the u18s Blue team that lost a very closely-contested game against an excellent Oxton team, but I would much rather congratulate the Timperley team on an excellent performance, which could so easily have resulted in victory if the odd play and the odd umpiring decision (only one person didn't think it was a goal!!!) had gone our way.
The whole team from back to front had to be on the top of their game - it's rare our defence gets a work-out like that - and they should be proud of themselves.
Timperley started well, scored first, and led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter, but it was difficult to maintain our intensity and Oxton improved with strong 2nd quarter to lead by two goals at half-time (10-8).
Oxton held onto their two goal lead in the third quarter, helped by a Timperley "goal" that bounced back out of the net, and wasn't awarded. Timperley didn't let this bother them and kept going to the end, rallying in the final quarter to take the lead 17-16 with a couple of minutes left. There were more chances for both teams in the closing minutes, but Oxton fought back again, took their chances and ran out 19-17 winners.
We need high quality games like that to continue to develop as individuals and as a team, and I'm sure it will stand us in good stead when we hopefully we get some competitive games in the New Year.
