A team knocked out in semi final; B team perform well in round robin stage

Today saw the annual 6 a side tournament at Timperley and it brought the usual excitement where the U12 lacrosse world shows what it can deliver. 15 teams each played four short matches in a round robin frenzy of quick fire lacrosse.

The A team won all its round robin matches, beating Heaton Mersey 15-0, Stockport B 15-0, Stockport A 6-2 and Poynton 13-0. The victory against Stockport A was a superb win where the team stuck to a plan and came away deservedly having inflicted the first defeat on Stockport at U12 this season.
The B team began with a win against Heaton Mersey Guild 14-0, then lost to Poynton 0-5. They followed this with a 3-0 victory over Norbury 3rd, before drawing 3-3 with Norbury 1st (although I believe there was some controversy over a couple of disallowed Timperley goals…..). Only getting 7 points meant the B team were out.
After the round robin was over, the A team had qualified in first place for the semi final, where they were drawn against Stockport. Unfortunately Stockport raised their game and we were less effective than in the previous victory. We went behind early and half time arrived at 1-4. A bit of a breather and a calm word from the coaches so nearly got us back on track. We got back to 3-4, but at that point we were still chasing the game and almost inevitably we got caught at the back, which finally left us on the wrong end of a 4-8 scoreline. For the record, Stockport beat Poynton 6-3 in the final.

We are all disappointed with the outcome as we always expect to do well. Timperley has a really good record in this tournament and in the last 5 years the U12 have produced two tournament wins, one final loss and two semi final losses. We so nearly put Stockport out at the round robin stage today. If they’d come up against one other half decent team they could well have been knocked out on goal difference – however it was not to be.

Well done to all the boys who played today. It was certainly the most pressured set of games most of them have experienced in their short lacrosse careers, and they will all have gained something from what they have gone through today.
