A late venue change due to rain meant that Timperley were hosts to a young and developing CH team. Timperley had a total of 15 players which enabled some rotation and more field time for some of our less experienced players, but it was our more established players that dominated the game from the start, George collecting a ground ball and providing the assist to Tom who was in a great position to score. Mattie won the face-off again, with Lukie using his pace through the middle to shoot and score. George added a third from another ground ball, then Tom added with a run from midfield. Timperley defence had been untested to this point, and were caught on the back foot when CH broke through to get a goal back, but Lukie and Kuba answered quickly - both scored from solid solo runs. Bruce was the next player to get on the scoresheet after some encouragement from his Dad, and Kuba showed his strength to add his second of the day. CH pulled one back from the free clear to finish the quarter 8-2 to the hosts.
The second quarter was much closer with Timperley taking the opportunity to field some new players and set up more structured attacking play. Khalid was the first to score before Bruce cut in from the wing with an unconventional underhand shot beating the CH keeper. Josh showed good positional intelligence in defence to stop a CH attack before George scored. I was pleased to see heads didn't drop for our opposition - the game was end-to-end with CH fighting back with 2 goals to close the half, the second with a run through from midfield. Q2 T3, CH2 score 11-4
Q3 saw Timperley focussing more on the set-up play, demonstrating some great passing before Tom scored. CH responded with a goal beating Lucca from a tight angle. Freddie continues to grow in confidence with his tackling and running and along with Jack Broatch and Luc Tse-Harrison they made life difficult for the CH midfield and attack. George had a cheeky goal rolling the ball into the net with their goalie expecting a higher shot. Q3 T2 CH1 score 13-5
In the final quarter, it was obvious the boys were involving the newer players where possible and keen to help them onto the score sheet. Sometimes the passes weren't collected but as they grow in experience and ability there will be a stronger balance across the team. There was some strong interplay between Mattie and Lukie, then a pass to Tom who was in a great position to find the back of the net. George then passed to Tom, again right in front of the goal, but he unselfishly passed the ball to Zack Lawton to get the biggest cheer of the day for his first Timperley U12 goal. Lukie used his pace down the wing beating 4 or 5 CH players - despite the rain I'm sure there were sparks form his boots - passing the ball to Tom who again provided the assist for George to close the scoreline 16-5 to Timperley.
It was great to see the enthusiasm from all the boys, keen to get their share of time on the field. Special mention to Mattie who was fantastic on the face-offs today and also proved to be a tough adversary in midfield chasing down and fighting for every ball. We had 7 players score today and whilst they get the most mentions in a higher scoring game, all the boys showed great commitment despite the cold and rain. I think the Russians were involved in the Man of the Match voting with an almost unanimous selection for Thomas O'Reilly but great to see the well deserved encouragement for the 'newbies'. Thanks to the Brennans for the cakes they provided for both teams at the end of the game.
